Liverpool's defeat in the early game gave Arsenal more motivation. However, coach Mikel Arteta and his students followed the same "footsteps" as their opponents. Arsenal were defeated by Aston Villa right at home in round 33 of the Premier League.
Arsenal and Aston Villa created high-tempo plays. The match was exciting from the first minutes when Arsenal actively pressured their opponents with quick plays.
The Gunners controlled the ball slightly in the first half. Arsenal's number of shots (14) was superior to the visitors' (6). Goalkeeper Emiliano Martinez's excellent reflexes helped Aston Villa escape from dangerous shots by Kai Havertz and Leandro Trossard.
Arsenal counter-attacked well enough to stop most of Aston Villa's responses, but the home side still had their moments. Gabriel Magalhaes' mistake almost cost the Gunners. Arsenal fans screamed when Ollie Watkins hit the post.
The game turned around at the start of the second half. Aston Villa started better after the break and put pressure on Arsenal. Luck was on the home team's side again when Youri Tielemans' beautiful shot hit the crossbar and the post.
Meanwhile, Arsenal's attacks were no longer as threatening as in the first half. Bukayo Saka and his teammates rarely created coordinated attacks to put pressure on the opponent's defense.
Unable to regain the initiative, Arsenal also failed to maintain concentration to withstand the opponent's attack. A moment of confusion from the home team's defenders and goalkeeper created an opportunity for Aston Villa striker Leon Bailey to score the opening goal in the 83rd minute.
Arsenal immediately pressed forward, but before they could respond, they conceded another goal a few minutes later. Aston Villa counter-attacked with Watkins the only one receiving the ball in the opposition half. The away striker calmly took a delicate shot, destroying Arsenal's hopes of keeping the points.
Losing 0-2 at home, Arsenal lost the top spot after round 33. The fact that both Arsenal and Liverpool lost brought good news to Man City. Coach Pep Guardiola's team is 2 points ahead of the 2 opponents below and has a more favorable schedule in the remaining rounds.
