Apple warns of the dangers of charging your iPhone while sleeping

Apple has provided an online user guide for users. Accordingly, the US technology giant said that iPhones should only be charged in places with air circulation, such as on a flat table, not on a thick blanket.

According to Apple, the iPhone heats up while charging, so if this heat cannot be dissipated, it can cause burns or even fires.

This is why leaving your charging phone under your pillow is considered one of the worst things a smartphone user can do.

Apple advises users not to sleep while charging their iPhone because it is dangerous.

Apple does not recommend charging your phone overnight, but the company does advise: "Avoid contact with the device, power adapter, or wireless charger while it is powered on or connected to a power source for extended periods of time."

Additionally, Apple recommends that users do not sleep on the device, power adapter, or wireless charger, or place them under a blanket, pillow, or close to the body while the device is connected to a power source.

“Keep iPhone, the power adapter, and any wireless charger in a well-ventilated area when in use or charging,” Apple’s instructions say.

Kent Fire Brigade, UK, is warning about the dangers of leaving your phone on a charging pad or plugged into a charger while you sleep, regardless of where it is placed.

In a TikTok video, one of the agency's employees outlines the main reason why users should only charge while awake. The employee emphasizes that charging overnight is dangerous because "users can't smell anything while sleeping, so they can't tell when a fire is going to start."

Another reason not to charge your iPhone while you sleep is because it affects the lifespan of your device. Phones typically take up to two hours to fully charge, but when plugged in overnight, they can be powered for eight hours or more. This increases the amount of heat the battery is exposed to, reducing its lifespan.

This is why it’s a good idea to remember to unplug your phone if you wake up in the night, or change your charging habits altogether. Alternatives include keeping the charger on your desk so you can unplug it as soon as it reaches 100%.

On iOS 13 and later, Apple updated a feature called “optimized battery charging,” which will limit the charging process when the battery reaches 80%. Apple said this limits the impact of overnight charging and increases battery life.
