On the afternoon of December 20, 2024, at the Government Headquarters, Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs Bui Thanh Son had a phone call with UK Secretary of State for Foreign Affairs and Development David Lammy.
During the phone call, Deputy Prime Minister and Minister Bui Thanh Son and UK Secretary of State for Foreign Affairs and Development David Lammy expressed their delight at the increasingly effective and extensive development of the Vietnam-UK relationship after nearly 15 years of establishing the Strategic Partnership, especially in the fields of politics - diplomacy, trade - investment, security - defense, climate change response, education - training, etc.
Deputy Prime Minister and Minister Bui Thanh Son affirmed that Vietnam attaches importance to and wishes to promote an increasingly substantive and effective Strategic Partnership with the UK. Secretary of State for Foreign Affairs and Development David Lammy emphasized that Vietnam is the UK's priority partner in Southeast Asia, especially in the fields of economic development, security and climate, and expressed his delight at the approval of the Vietnam-UK Action Plan for the period 2024-2026 on the occasion of the Vietnam-UK Strategic Dialogue taking place in October 2024.

Discussing measures to promote political trust and create momentum to deepen cooperation between the two countries in the coming time, the two sides agreed to increase the exchange of delegations at all levels, especially high-level delegations; continue to effectively implement cooperation mechanisms, bilateral dialogues such as Strategic Dialogue, Defense Policy Dialogue, Migration Dialogue, etc., and closely coordinate in implementing the Vietnam - UK Action Plan for the period 2024 - 2026.
The two sides were pleased with the positive developments in economic cooperation, an important pillar of the Vietnam-UK Strategic Partnership. Deputy Prime Minister and Minister Bui Thanh Son congratulated and highly appreciated the UK's official participation in the Comprehensive and Progressive Agreement for Trans-Pacific Partnership (CPTPP) and believed that together with the positive impact of the Vietnam-UK Free Trade Agreement (UKVFTA), the UK's participation in the CPTPP will contribute to promoting trade between the Bloc and the UK, while also contributing to strengthening the Strategic Partnership that has been developing very well between Vietnam and the UK in recent times.

Regarding cooperation in responding to climate change and energy transition, Minister Bui Thanh Son highly appreciated the UK's support for Vietnam within the framework of the Just Energy Transition Partnership (JETP) between Vietnam and the G7 group of leading developed economies; expressed his hope that the UK would continue to support Vietnam in implementing the Resource Mobilization Plan (RMP) to implement JETP announced at the COP 28 Conference, facilitating Vietnam's access to capital, technology and human resource training. Minister David Lammy affirmed that the UK will continue to accompany and support Vietnam in responding to climate change and developing a sustainable economy; and wished to cooperate and expand UK investment in the field of offshore wind power development.
In the field of security and defense, Deputy Prime Minister and Minister Bui Thanh Son welcomed the high-ranking delegation of the UK Ministry of Defense to attend the 2nd Vietnam International Defense Exhibition taking place in Hanoi from December 19 to 22, 2024. Minister David Lammy said that British defense enterprises are pleased to participate in the Exhibition and are ready to cooperate with Vietnamese partners in this field. The two sides agreed to continue to promote cooperation in the field of security and defense, especially in implementing dialogue mechanisms, maritime cooperation, improving professional capacity, preventing crime and migration.
Deputy Prime Minister and Minister Bui Thanh Son and Minister of Foreign Affairs and Development David Lammy expressed their belief that with the good cooperation results and the efforts of the agencies, organizations and partners of the two countries, the Strategic Partnership between Vietnam and the UK will be elevated in the coming time, especially in the context that the two countries will celebrate the 15th anniversary of the establishment of the Vietnam-UK Strategic Partnership (2010-2025).
