Impressions of the Vietnam Student Sports Festival in Saint Petersburg

The women's football matches were exciting.

Joining in the joyful and exciting atmosphere to celebrate the 49th anniversary of the Liberation of the South and National Reunification (April 30, 1975 - April 30, 2024), the 70th anniversary of the Dien Bien Phu Victory Day (May 7, 1954 - May 7, 2024), responding to maintaining and promoting the campaign "All people exercise following the example of great Uncle Ho", with the permission of the Party Committee of the Saint Petersburg Department and the Executive Committee of the Youth Union in the Russian Federation, the Saint Petersburg Youth Union successfully organized the Saint Petersburg Sports Festival in 2024.

The Saint Petersburg Sports Festival (formerly the Victory Olympics on April 30) is held annually in late April and early May to celebrate major national holidays. This is a sporting event that attracts the participation of a large number of students and the Vietnamese community in Saint Petersburg.

Mr. Vo Nguyen Giap, Secretary of the Party Committee of the Saint Petersburg Department spoke at the event.

This year, the Games took place from April 21 to May 1, gathering 265 athletes from 8 delegations with 301 athletes competing in 5 sports, including volleyball, women's football, table tennis, tug of war, and tennis. Among them, there was 1 delegation of athletes from the Vietnamese community.

The Congress received enthusiastic response and participation from union members and young people. After intense, thrilling and exciting competitions, the best teams and individuals of the Congress were honored and awarded at the Closing Ceremony on the evening of May 1.

Mr. Do The Manh, Secretary of the Saint Petersburg Youth Union, Head of the Organizing Committee, presented souvenir flags to representatives of participating teams.

As a result, in the tug of war event, the HAPISAN 2 team (part of the joint team of Vietnamese students from the following branches: Pedagogy-Cinema-Forestry, Maritime and Navy) won. In the tennis event, the championship trophy belonged to the pair of athletes Nguyen Van Dung and Nguyen Van Vuong.

The women's football championship and table tennis events were won by athletes from the ITMO National Research University. The final event to close the Games was volleyball, with the overall victory belonging to the HAPISAN team.

This year's overall first prize went to the ITMO National Research University athletes with 5 Gold medals and 3 Silver medals.

Speaking at the event, Mr. Vo Nguyen Giap, Secretary of the Party Committee of the Saint Petersburg Department, highly appreciated the sports movement of students and the Vietnamese community in the city. Mr. Vo Nguyen Giap emphasized that everyone, especially the young generation, needs to learn and follow the example of great Uncle Ho and practice sports regularly.

Mr. Duong Chi Kien, representative of the Vietnamese community in Saint Petersburg, shared the sports training experiences of generations of Vietnamese students who studied in Russia.

Mr. Duong Chi Kien believes that sports not only help connect people and create a vibrant atmosphere for young people, but also help improve health to work effectively. The Vietnamese community in the city will always support and accompany.
