Indian Foreign Minister Subrahmanyam Jaishankar stressed the importance of respecting the 1982 United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea (UNCLOS) and supported ASEAN's position in the process of determining entitlements based on this convention.

The above statement was made at the ASEAN Regional Forum (ARF) within the framework of the 56th ASEAN Foreign Ministers' Meeting (AMM-56) and related conferences in Jakarta, Indonesia on July 14.
Indian Foreign Minister Subrahmanyam Jaishankar expressed concern over activities that undermine peace and stability, and stressed that any Code of Conduct of parties in the East Sea must not prejudice the rights and interests of third parties.
Foreign Minister Jaishankar also appreciated the important role of ASEAN in India's Act East policy and New Delhi's broader vision for the Indo-Pacific region.
On the same day, External Affairs Minister Jaishankar met with Wang Yi, Director of the Office of the Foreign Affairs Commission of the Communist Party of China Central Committee. The purpose of the meeting was to discuss pressing issues related to peace in the border areas of the two countries.
On his Twitter account, Foreign Minister Jaishankar shared information about the meeting. Apart from border issues, the two sides discussed the East Asia Summit, the ARF agenda, the BRICS group of leading emerging economies and the Indo-Pacific region.
According to AFP, during a meeting with Indian Foreign Minister Subrahmanyam Jaishankar on July 14 on the sidelines of the ASEAN foreign ministers' meeting in Jakarta, Mr. Wang Yi affirmed: "The common interests of China and India clearly outweigh the disagreements between the two countries. The two sides should support each other, instead of... doubting each other."
"We hope the Indian side will compromise with China and find a solution to the border issue that is acceptable to both sides," China's top diplomat said.
