Artificial intelligence (AI)-guided brain stimulation may help improve memory in patients with traumatic brain injury (TBI).

The results of the study, published in the journal Brain Stimulation, showed that targeted electrical stimulation in patients with TBI increased word recall by an average of 19%.
The research team, led by Michael Jacob Kahana, a psychology professor at the University of Pennsylvania, studied TBI patients with implanted electrodes and analyzed neural data as the patients learned words. The team also used machine learning algorithms to predict temporary memory loss. Scientists say more research is needed before this type of brain stimulation can be used to treat TBI patients.
Scientists also need to study physiological responses to stimulation to better understand the neural mechanisms underlying improved memory performance.
