After four years of creating content on YouTube, the girl from Ben Tre has made more than 200 videos about culture, lifestyle and cuisine of the West.
Nguyen Thi My Duyen (born in 1994, from Ben Tre) is the owner of a famous YouTube channel, specializing in sharing videos about cuisine, lifestyle and culture of the West. “I love the peaceful life in the countryside and want to explore the beauty of regional culture across the country. I am also passionate about food, often cooking for my family. When I achieved certain successes in life, I realized that the time for myself and my family was getting less and less. Therefore, I decided to create a YouTube channel to preserve the cultural and culinary values of the countryside, as well as record a series of everyday moments with my family,” the 30-year-old beauty shared.

Up to now, after 4 years of establishment, My Duyen's YouTube channel has more than 200 videos about cuisine and culture of the Western region, attracting more than 106 million views. On average, each video is 15 - 20 minutes long, introducing unique dishes and specialties in Ben Tre, Bac Lieu, An Giang, etc. Duyen said that before the Covid-19 pandemic broke out, she and her colleagues often went to the Western provinces and exploited content about culture and cuisine in each region. The small, simple, rustic kitchen is the favorite setting of the Ben Tre girl when making Western culinary videos. The first place they stopped was Mo Cay Nam district, Ben Tre province. Although they had to travel all over the alleys to find a suitable thatched house to use as a backdrop, they were fortunate to receive enthusiastic support from the homeowner. After the pandemic, the young girl decided to build a thatched house in the countryside to make videos as well as rest and relax on weekends.
My Duyen's videos about food and rustic life in the West receive a lot of support and positive feedback from viewers.
The 30-year-old beauty said it can take 1-2 days to complete a video. In addition to preparing the ingredients herself, she also has to consult how to process and season the spices to make them most suitable and authentic because "Vietnamese dishes are very rich, each region has its own way of cooking and enjoying them". "The preparation of ingredients also requires a lot of time and dedication. There are times when we have to travel very far just to find one type of ingredient. For example, where I live, Ba Tri district, does not have many fruit trees, so when making a video about fruit, the whole crew had to travel dozens of kilometers to Chau Thanh district to film the harvest scene and then return home to film the processing scene", Duyen recalled.

Every month, the 9X girl will spend about 7 - 10 days to focus on producing a video once, posting it on her personal YouTube channel every Wednesday. In addition to gifts and specialties containing cultural values of each region, the young girl also prioritizes preparing dishes for special events and holidays such as making moon cakes on the 15th day of the 8th lunar month, cooking vegetarian dishes during Vu Lan season or making delicious dishes from linh fish during the flood season,...

My Duyen admits that creating culinary content is hard work and cannot avoid incidents. She was refused many times when asking the homeowner for permission to film the house as a video backdrop or got burned or cut her hand while cooking. However, this passion also brings the beauty from Ben Tre great spiritual values such as having more time to gather with her family, preserving her youth and spreading the beauty of regional cuisine to friends at home and abroad,...
In the video, My Duyen tries to incorporate details that highlight the beauty of Western culture such as wearing conical hats, ao ba ba, and wooden clogs.
Through each video, My Duyen hopes to recreate the simple life in the Southwest countryside so that children far from home will always remember their motherland. At the same time, the rustic footage with images of simple thatched houses and rustic home-cooked meals are also considered memories for future generations to watch again, thereby knowing how their grandparents and parents lived in the past.
Through the films, My Duyen not only hopes to connect the community of food lovers in the country but also help overseas Vietnamese find the taste of their homeland, as well as spread the value of Vietnamese culinary culture to international audiences.
“Through images and sounds, we send the most peaceful and familiar things,” the 9X expressed.
