8 Canadian Universities with the Most International Students

Many Canadian universities have about 30% of their total student population being international students, some of which are among the top in the world.

According to statistics released by Statista in January, Canada is one of the three countries with the most international students in the world. The country has many attractions for international students, such as a safe learning environment, lower tuition fees than in the US and UK, and a post-graduate work permit (PGWP) policy that facilitates settlement. In 2022 alone, Canada welcomed more than 500,000 international students, an increase of 24% compared to 2021.

Here are the eight Canadian universities with the highest proportion of international students, according to this year's rankings by Times Higher Education (THE):

1. University of British Columbia

The University of British Columbia has the highest proportion of international students of any university in Canada - 34% of its more than 58,000 undergraduate students.

The university has two campuses, one in Vancouver and one in the Okanagan Valley, British Columbia. It is ranked 3rd in Canada and 34th in the world according to the 2024 QS rankings. The most highly rated subjects here are Plant and Animal Sciences, Environment/Ecosystems, Social Sciences and Public Health.

The school's acceptance rate is approximately 50% at the Vancouver campus and 70% at the Okanagan campus. The school's 2023-2024 tuition fees for international students range from CAD 42,500-58,600 (VND 770 million-1 billion).

2. Concordia University

In second place for the percentage of international students is Concordia University. The school currently has about 35,400 students, 34% of whom are international students.

Concordia University is located in Montreal, Quebec, and is ranked 17th in Canada by QS. Its outstanding programs include Civil Engineering, Electrical and Electronic Engineering, and General Engineering.

The school's acceptance rate is 78%. This school year, tuition for international students ranges from CAD 27,600-33,300 (VND 500-600 million).

3. Simon Fraser University

Simon Fraser University has the third highest proportion of international students in Canada - 31% of its 37,400 undergraduate students.

Simon Fraser University is located in three cities in British Columbia, including Burnaby, Surrey and Vancouver. The school is ranked 13th among the best universities in Canada. The school's strengths are Social Sciences, Public Health, Environmental Health and Computer Science.

The school's acceptance rate is approximately 60% of total applicants. Simon Fraser's tuition for the 2023-2024 academic year is CAD 32,700 (VND 590 million).

4. McGill

McGill University, located in Montreal, Quebec, has the fourth-highest number of international students in Canada. Of the nearly 6,400 students who enrolled last year, about 1,900 came from other countries, or 30 percent.

It is the second best university in Canada and 30th globally, according to QS. Its top-ranked subjects are Neuroscience and Behavioural Sciences, Molecular Biology and Genetics, and Infectious Diseases.

The school accepts about 47% of applications. New international students entering this year will pay between CAD 28,600 and CAD 68,900 (VND 520 million and VND 1.2 billion) in tuition, depending on their major.

5. University of Windsor

The University of Windsor, located in the city of the same name, Ontario, also has nearly 30% of its total student population (16,300) being foreign.

The school is ranked 21st in the QS list of top universities in Canada in 2024. The prestigious subjects here are Electrical and Electronic Engineering, Engineering and Computer Science.

The University of Windsor's acceptance rate is around 60%. Tuition fees this year range from CAD 38,400-43,400 (VND 690-780 million) for international students.

6. Dalhousie University

Located in Nova Scotia, Dalhousie University has 16,000 undergraduate students, of which more than 28% are international students, the 6th highest in Canada.

Ranked in the top 12 universities in Canada, Dalhousie offers the best training in the fields of Environment-Ecosystems, Geosciences and Psychiatry-Psychology.

The school has an acceptance rate of about 70%. New international students entering this year will have to pay 26,000-41,000 CAD (470-740 million VND) in tuition.

7. University of Alberta

The University of Alberta, located in Edmonton, Alberta. Of its more than 32,300 students, 9,100 are international students, or 28%.

Alberta is ranked as the fourth best university in Canada by both QS and US News. The school is highly rated in the subjects of Gastroenterology and Hepatology, Agricultural Sciences and Food Technology.

The school's acceptance rate is 58%. This school year, the school's tuition for international students ranges from CAD 29,200 to CAD 96,500 (VND 530 million - VND 1.7 billion).

8. York University

York University, located in Toronto, Ontario, also has 28% of its students coming from outside the country. However, with more than 52,000 students, the number of international students is 14,500, higher than the University of Alberta.

QS ranks York University as the 16th best quality university in Canada. The school offers the best courses in Economics and Business, Arts and Humanities, and Psychiatry and Psychology.

About 60% of applications to the school are accepted. International students will have to pay 32,400 to 40,300 CAD (nearly 590-740 million VND) for tuition this year.
