It was only late afternoon, but the small house of Mr. Trinh Van Son's family (57 years old, living in Kinh Trong hamlet, Binh Hoa commune, Giong Trom, Ben Tre) was quite dark.
The walls and roof were dark, the floor was littered with furniture, and screams occasionally came from the dark room, making strangers like us feel somewhat scared.
Difficult circumstances of Mr. Son's family (Performed by: Nguyen Cuong).
Seeing guests, Mrs. Nguyen Thi Hong Lan (55 years old, Mr. Son's wife) was cleaning the house and explaining: "They are like their mother, when they have a fit they destroy everything, throwing away anything they can't put away. The house is dark because their mother burned it down."
Before she could finish cleaning, Mrs. Lan had to rush over to stop her three grandchildren from fighting.
After controlling the "madness" of the three grandchildren, Mr. Son and Mrs. Lan invited us to the porch, where we sat and told stories.
Mr. Son is a veteran, leaving the battlefield in Cambodia with a wound that caused a distorted skull, poor health, and an unclear mind. Mrs. Lan has a mild heart disease, bone and joint problems, goiter, kidney stones, blurred vision, and is often forgetful...
All 5 members of Mr. Son's family are sick (Photo: Nguyen Cuong).
Mr. Son and his wife only have 2 daughters (28 and 25 years old), but both of them suffer from mental illness, and the family has spent a lot of money on treatment but to no avail. Previously, in a fit of madness, the 2 daughters burned down the house and stabbed Mrs. Lan, causing Mr. Son and his wife to live in constant fear.
"But for more than 10 years now, the two of them have left, and we don't know where they are. Every now and then, one of them comes home with their grandchild, leaving us to look after their child, and then they leave again," Mr. Son said sadly.
Up to now, 2 children have been sent to Mr. Son to raise 3 grandchildren, more sadly, all 3 of them have mental illness. The oldest grandson is 10 years old this year, the next 2 children include 1 boy and 1 girl, both 7 years old.
Mrs. Lan said that although her three grandchildren are all going to school, none of them can read or understand anything. There are currently five people in the family, all of whom are sick and have to take medicine twice a day.
"If he and I don't take the medicine, we'll just feel pain. But if we take the medicine late, the three children could go crazy immediately," Ms. Lan said sadly.

Life is always in a state of deprivation, everyone is sick but the family only dares to buy medicine to keep things going. Mrs. Lan wants to take her grandchildren to get medical treatment because the children still have a future ahead of them, but because of the lack of conditions, she has no choice but to give up.
Previously, Mr. Son and his wife "tried" to sell lottery tickets to earn extra income. But because they were not clear-headed, after being tricked several times by scammers and losing their capital, they had to quit.
The civil servant of Labor, War Invalids and Social Affairs of Binh Hoa commune said that Mr. Son's family has no land. For many years, the family's only income has been his war invalids allowance and the allowance for his two daughters. Currently, the family is a poor household, the total of the two monthly payments is nearly 3.6 million VND.

"Last year, my grandparents submitted the medical records of their three grandchildren to the commune for consideration of subsidies, but their conditions did not meet the criteria, so they have not received any benefits yet. The family is all sick and has to buy a lot of medicine from outside, which is expensive and makes life very difficult," the commune official added.
The leader of the Red Cross Society of Giong Trom district also said that Mr. Son’s family is the most difficult situation in the locality that the unit has recorded. Every time there is a support program, the Society prioritizes Mr. Son’s family, but can only help a part, and is in great need of support from society.
