Thousands of people clean up Da Nang beach.
On the morning of October 21, the Da Nang City Youth Union organized a general clean-up of the marine environment along Nguyen Tat Thanh Street (in Thanh Khe and Lien Chieu districts) with the participation of 3,000 youth union members. The Da Nang Bay beach area, about 6km long, is where dozens of tons of garbage were washed ashore by waves after the prolonged flooding from October 13-17.
From 6am on October 21, volunteers including youth union members, police and military forces, and high school students were present at Nguyen Tat Thanh beach with tools such as rakes, hoes, gloves, etc. to clean up.
After the recent heavy rains, tons of waste were pushed upstream of the Cu De River, canals and ditches by floodwaters into Da Nang Bay, then washed ashore by waves, with some spots being 20-30cm thick. The waste was mainly tree branches, foam, animal carcasses, plastic waste... lying scattered along the coast.
Military forces participated in the general cleaning of Da Nang Bay beach. By noon on October 21, it was estimated that tons of trash had been collected.
Despite the hot weather, the police, army and youth union members urgently collected trash to quickly return a clean environment to Da Nang Bay.
Along the coast of Da Nang Bay, volunteers divided themselves into three main cleaning locations: the Phan Van Dinh - Nguyen Tat Thanh intersection, the beach area near Yen Khe Street, and the beach area opposite Ly Thai Tong Street.
According to Ms. Nguyen Thi Anh Thao, Deputy Secretary of the Da Nang City Youth Union, today the City Youth Union mobilized all its forces to clean up Nguyen Tat Thanh beach as soon as possible. The core force is the members of the high school youth union. Besides, there are also local youth forces, other units such as the Department of Natural Resources and Environment, the army, the police, and coastal residents.
Garbage is collected, loaded onto tractors and transported to several locations on the sidewalk of Nguyen Tat Thanh Street, then transported by environmental company vehicles to the landfill.
