Microsoft will reportedly stop supporting its Windows 10 operating system in October 2025. Canalys Research says the move could leave around 240 million computers without a PC.
Microsoft will stop supporting Windows 10 from October 2025 |
After Microsoft stops supporting Windows 10, computers running the operating system will still function normally. However, users will face risks related to security issues.
Microsoft also offers extended paid support for Windows 10 users until October 2028. However, based on past trends, Canalys Research believes that users should consider paying more for older Windows 10 devices, especially when new Windows 11 products are more powerful and increasingly cheaper. Therefore, users will be more inclined to choose to buy Windows 11 products.
With so many Windows 10 computers being discarded, experts say they could be recycled. For example, hard drives could be separated for materials used in electric vehicle motors or renewable energy equipment; or batteries could be processed and recovered for rare metals like lithium, cobalt, and nickel.
Microsoft has yet to comment on Canalys Research's information.
