The Department of Preventive Medicine (Ministry of Health) provides guidance on how to have a safe source of water for daily use after floods, ensure health and prevent disease outbreaks by using two-step water purification measures.

Step 1: Do it in water

There are many ways to do this in water, the simplest is to use alum or filter with a clean cloth.

- Clarify with alum: use alum at a dose of 1g alum for 20 liters of water.

Scoop a ladle of water, dissolve the amount of alum equivalent to the volume of water that needs to be clarified, put it in a water container and stir well, wait about 30 minutes for the sediment to settle to the bottom, then decant the clear water.

- If you don't have alum, you can use a clean cloth to filter the water, keeping the dirt, do this several times until the water is clear (note that the filter cloth must be made of cotton so that the water can pass through, you need to change the cloth when you see a lot of dirt on the filter cloth).

Step 2: Disinfect water

After the water has been clarified, it is necessary to disinfect the water. This can be done by using chemicals or boiling the water.

Water disinfection with chemicals: For households, water is often disinfected with Chloramine B.

Currently, the most popular are Chloramine B 0.25g tablets or Aquatabs 67mg tablets, which are very convenient for disinfecting small volumes of water such as jars, pots, vats, buckets, basins or small water tanks.

For Chloramine B 0.25g tablet: put 1 Chloramine B 0.25g tablet into a 25 liter tank of clarified water, stir well, cover, wait 30 minutes and it can be used as domestic water.

For Aquatabs 67mg tablets: put 1 Aquatabs 67mg tablet into a 20 liter container of clarified water, stir well, cover and wait 30 minutes before use.

Note that disinfected water can be used for domestic purposes. However, this water must still be boiled before it can be drunk directly. Do not disinfect at the same time as adding alum because alum reduces the disinfecting effect of chlorine.

After disinfection, if you smell chlorine, the disinfection is effective. If you accidentally add too much chlorine, open the lid and wait another half hour or an hour for the strong smell to subside.

The Department of Preventive Medicine also recommends that water should only be used for drinking directly after boiling. Boiled water should not be left for too long, and new water should be boiled daily for drinking.

In addition to the above water treatment measures, households can use additional filtration equipment to treat water. The water filtration efficiency of the equipment depends on the quality of the input water, filtration technology, condition and quality of the filtration equipment, time of use, etc.

Note that the input water of water filtration equipment must be purified water. Do not use surface water directly from rivers, streams, or canals to avoid clogging the filtration equipment.
