10. Explore the Arctic
Many cruise companies take passengers around the Arctic on thousands of giant ships. But for an “intimate, once-in-a-lifetime, environmentally conscious trip,” try a small-ship cruise with Secret Atlas.
“One itinerary will take travellers on a wildlife safari through the lesser-known northern regions of Svalbard, while the other will take in the cathedral-sized icebergs of north-east Greenland, one of which includes a unique visit to Ittoqqortoormiit, one of the most remote towns on earth.” These trips don’t come cheap – with prices starting at £15,500 for two weeks.
9. Explore the borderlands of the "cultural capital of Europe"
Gorizia, Italy, and Nova Gorica, Slovenia, were separated by the Iron Curtain in 1947. But now, the cobblestone squares on one side merge with the Soviet-era architecture on the other.
And Goricas, along with Germany's Chemnitz, has been awarded the title of 'European Capital of Culture' for 2025. To celebrate, more than 400 events will be held throughout the year, all under the theme of 'no borders'.

Singapore is famous for its vast Mandai Wildlife Sanctuary – and the attraction is set to open its fifth animal park, Rainforest Wild Asia, this year.
According to Time Out, the new park will cover 13 hectares and have 10 different areas as well as 29 different animal species and be "a great day out for everyone".
7. Explore Central Vietnam by classic steam train
Vietnam has “some of the most unique landscapes on the planet,” Time Out notes, “from steep limestone mountains and terraced rice hills to island-strewn coastlines.”
And this year, visitors will "be able to soak up all that beauty from beautifully restored vintage trains."
Two of them, dating from the 1960s, have been rebuilt by some of the engineers who built them, and they will transport passengers between downtown Da Nang and the ancient capital of Hue.
6. Discover the place where the attraction was born
A huge celebration of post-impressionist painter Paul Cezanne is being held in the French city of Aix-en-Provence where he grew up.
The event programme, according to Time Out, will include tours around the artist's childhood home and adult haunts, including his former home and studio, Jas de Bouffan, which has recently been renovated.
In addition, the Musée Granet will exhibit nearly 100 works by Cezanne, appearing in the same space for the first time.
5. Explore the museum of black artists
The Studio Museum in Harlem, New York, first opened 56 years ago in a rented loft on Fifth Avenue by a group of activists who wanted a space to showcase the work of black artists.
The place closed for construction nearly seven years ago and will finally reopen this fall, in a custom-built building on West 125th Street.
The collection will draw from an archive of nearly 9,000 works by all manner of creators, from painter Jordan Casteel to visual artist Wangechi Mutu, beginning with an exhibition of works by the late sculptor Tom Lloyd (the first artist ever to exhibit here).
4.Fly directly to Greenland
The remote Arctic territory of Greenland has long been one of the most mysterious places on the planet. But it will become “a little less mysterious to visitors” this year thanks to the opening of a brand new international airport just outside the capital, Nuuk. Operations will begin later this year, and by 2025 there will be multiple weekly flights from both Europe and the US.

1. Participate in the once-in-25-years festival in Rome
The Italian capital will see millions of pilgrims flock to it as the city celebrates a spiritual Jubilee this year.
The Catholic festival, held every 25 years, begins in late December 2024, with the opening of the Holy Doors – usually sealed with mortar and cement – in papal basilicas including St. Peter's and St. John Lateran.
Throughout the year, there are many events held, including masses, processions, pilgrimages and free visits to shrines and holy sites. Among them is the Seven Churches Pilgrimage, which dates back to the 16th century and involves a 25km walk through the city and countryside between the major basilicas.
