Berkshire Hathaway Travel Protection - a famous travel insurance company based in North America - on May 9 released its annual report on the world's safest destinations, including the Australian city of Sydney.
The top 10 cities on this list include: Honolulu (USA), Montreal (Canada), Reykjavik (Iceland), Sydney (Australia), Amsterdam (Netherlands), Dubai (United Arab Emirates), Copenhagen (Denmark), London (UK), Seoul (South Korea) and Venice (Italy).
Berkshire Hathaway Travel Protection's report is based on a combination of traveler survey questions and third-party data sources to assess weather emergencies, health measures, terrorism and the safety of underrepresented groups.
Honolulu received the highest marks for safety for women, LGBTQ+ travellers and people of colour, while Montreal scored the highest for traffic safety.
Based on the data, in terms of the safest countries in the world, Australia ranked 10th, down significantly from 4th place last year.
Despite this, Sydney is still considered a safe travel destination, with its ranking rising to 4th in 2024, from 10th in 2023.
Sydney is also the only Australian city to appear in the list of the 15 safest cities in the world. According to the report, wildlife is the main danger to watch out for in this Oceania country.
