Born in the year the capital was liberated, Mr. Tran Chien Thang is the youngest son of Dr. Tran Duy Hung. “My father drives himself everywhere to do his work. In the summer, he usually wears short-sleeved shirts and shorts. Many times when I went with him to visit farmers, I learned that he kept that way of dressing because he was willing to wade into the fields with the farmers. My father also kept a notebook to record his meetings with the people and their wishes; at the same time, he marked the cases that were or were not resolved,” Mr. Tran Chien Thang shared.
According to Mr. Tran Chien Thang, during the days when Hanoi was bombed by American planes, his father directly helped nurses and doctors bandage the wounded many times. “My father said, many other people can do that, but seeing him do it, people will panic less. At the most extreme times, people need to see their leaders by their side,” Mr. Tran Chien Thang recalled.

Two of Dr. Tran Duy Hung's sons, Tran Thang Loi and Tran Chien Thang, volunteered to join the army. Doctor Tran Duy Hung (1912-1988) came from a middle-class, well-educated family in Hoe Thi village, Xuan Phuong commune (now Phuong Canh ward, Nam Tu Liem district). At the age of 30, he became a good doctor and, together with his sister, opened a private hospital to treat and save people. During this time, with his talent and prestige, he repeatedly protected Viet Minh soldiers from enemy encirclement.
