Factors ensuring fire prevention and fighting safety on tourist boats

VietNamNetVietNamNet26/11/2023

In fact, fires on ships at sea are not rare, including many cases of property being burned down.

On August 2, a tourist boat from Quang Ninh province suddenly caught fire in the Dau Chu sea area, Cat Hai district (Hai Phong). Upon receiving the news, the authorities in Hai Phong city quickly deployed to put out the fire.

At the time of the fire, there were 6 crew members on board. Luckily, all of them escaped in time before the ship was engulfed in flames with black smoke rising hundreds of meters high.

It took more than an hour of effort to bring the fire under control. However, because the ship was made of wood, it was severely damaged.

Fire police practice rescue with tourist boats

Previously, on November 22, 2021, a fire was also recorded on two tourist boats in the waters of Bai Chay Ward, Ha Long City (Quang Ninh). According to information from the authorities, at the time of the fire, because the two boats were moving close to each other, the fire spread from one boat to the other.

Firefighters were immediately dispatched to the scene. However, due to strong winds, the fire spread quickly and it took firefighters several hours to control the fire on the two ships. Although there were no casualties, the fire destroyed a lot of property.

These are just two of many fires involving cruise ships that have occurred. According to a representative of the Fire Prevention and Fighting and Rescue Police Department (PCCC&CNCH), implementing fire fighting measures for this type of vehicle is difficult due to the limited fire fighting and rescue equipment at sea.

Deploying rescue operations with boats facing many difficulties

A representative of the Fire Prevention and Rescue Police Department explained that when carrying out firefighting operations on ships, the authorities must take into account the stability of the ship, avoiding capsizing or sinking the ship. Therefore, the deployment of search and rescue operations will be much more limited.

This representative said that the main risk leading to fire and explosion incidents on ships is mainly due to the excessive use of high-power electrical appliances that are not designed. In addition, fires can also break out from electrical short circuits, smoking in the wrong place, unsafe cooking activities on ships, incorrect repair procedures, refueling, etc.

To limit and minimize the risk of fire and explosion on tourist ships, the representative of the Fire Prevention and Fighting Police Department recommends that ship owners regularly disseminate to crew members the regulations in the Fire Prevention and Fighting Law, standards and regulations on fire prevention and fighting.

Always raise vigilance and awareness of fire safety to ensure the safety of members and passengers.

Crew members need to be trained in fire fighting skills.

Crew members on board also need to be fully trained in fire prevention and fighting skills such as using on-site fire extinguishers and instructions on how to check on-site fire prevention and fighting equipment on board.

In addition, investors also need to regularly check, inspect, and replace fire prevention equipment to prevent fire and explosion situations, so that these equipment can still be used.
