According to this leader, in fact, we don't have to wait until SEA Games 32, but before that, the General Department of Sports and Physical Training had proposed to confer the title of Labor Hero on Coach Mai Duc Chung, however, for many different reasons, this has not been implemented yet.

Coach Mai Duc Chung helps Vietnam women's team win 4 consecutive SEA Games gold medals

"Up to now, the sports industry has only had one person awarded the title of Hero of Labor by the state, the late Associate Professor, Doctor, Vice President of the Vietnam Olympic Committee Hoang Vinh Giang.

Sports is an industry with its own unique characteristics, with great contributions and sacrifices from managers, coaches, athletes... Therefore, we always hope that Vietnamese sports will have many people honored and receive noble titles," said the leader of the General Department of Sports and Physical Training.

Throughout his career, Coach Mai Duc Chung (71 years old) has contributed to Vietnamese football in many roles, from player (playing for Hanoi Coach Club and Vietnam Railways), assistant coach, coach of many teams in V-League, head coach of national team levels.

Coach Mai Duc Chung once led U22 Vietnam to win the 2008 Merdeka Cup in Malaysia.

Regarding women's football, Mr. Mai Duc Chung is the most successful coach in Vietnamese and Southeast Asian football, having led the Vietnamese women's team to the World Cup for the first time and recently set a record of winning the SEA Games gold medal for the 4th consecutive time.

Mr. Chung also helped Vietnam achieve the most success in women's football history at the SEA Games with 8 gold medals, far surpassing Thailand, the team behind, with 3 gold medals.

Notably, of the 8 gold medals won by the Vietnamese women's team, Mr. Chung has 6 terms as head coach at the SEA Games 2003, 2005, 2017, 2019, 2021 and 2023. No other football coach in Vietnam or the region has achieved this feat.

Coach Mai Duc Chung deserves to be honored

After the 32nd SEA Games, Coach Mai Duc Chung will continue to lead the Vietnamese women's team to the World Cup next July in New Zealand.

"There were times when I wanted to quit because I was getting old, but because of my love for women's football and the players, I stayed. After many successes, what I still want most is for my players to have stable jobs and start families when they retire," coach Mai Duc Chung shared emotionally.

From June 1, 2014, the criteria to be awarded or posthumously awarded the title "Labor Hero" for individuals must meet the following criteria:
