For the first time in history, the Vietnamese women's team has qualified for the 2023 FIFA Women's World Cup finals. Coach Mai Duc Chung and his team are one of six Asian representatives, along with China, Japan, South Korea, the Philippines and Australia, participating in the tournament.
This is a worthy reward for the Vietnamese women's team after their tireless efforts and the heavy impact of the COVID-19 pandemic. The "Golden Star" won 3rd place in the group at the 2022 Asian Cup, thereby advancing to the Quarterfinals.
The defeat to the Chinese women's team did not discourage the team, but on the contrary, it gave the Vietnamese girls more strength to defeat Thailand and Chinese Taipei in the play-off series, thereby winning tickets to New Zealand.
The 2023 FIFA Women's World Cup is the ninth FIFA Women's World Cup, which will be held in Australia and New Zealand. It is the first World Cup to be held in Oceania and the first to be held simultaneously in two countries. The tournament will take place from 20 July to 20 August 2023.
The tournament will feature 32 teams, including 30 qualifiers plus hosts Australia and New Zealand. Eight teams, Morocco, Philippines, Vietnam, Zambia, Republic of Ireland, Haiti, Portugal and Panama, will be making their debuts. 64 matches will be played across 10 stadiums in 9 host cities.
According to the draw results, the Vietnamese women's team is in Group E, facing opponents Netherlands, USA and Portugal. Vietnam's group will take place in New Zealand.
Coach Mai Duc Chung and his team will face very strong opponents, because the US is the reigning World Cup champion, while the Netherlands is the reigning runner-up and also the European champion.
In this group, Portugal (ranked 21st in FIFA) is considered the easiest opponent for Vietnam (ranked 32nd in FIFA). Because this is also the first time a European team has participated in a World Cup finals, similar to the "Golden Star".
