Cutting mountains to patch landslides in railway tunnel connecting Phu Yen and Khanh Hoa

The construction unit implemented a plan to drill from the mountain and pour concrete inside to patch up landslides in the Bai Gio railway tunnel, according to the leader of the railway management unit.

The information was announced by Mr. Le Quang Vinh, Director of Phu Khanh Railway Exploitation Branch, on the afternoon of April 14.

With the new plan, construction units drill from above the mountain (the top of the tunnel) to pour concrete into the tunnel cover area. When the concrete hardens, workers go inside the tunnel to clear the soil and rocks, transporting them out. The tunnel will be fitted with beams to reinforce the inside, and repair the remaining parts.

"This plan may require thousands of cubic meters of concrete to reinforce the landslides," said Mr. Vinh, adding that this method is laborious and time-consuming, but ensures safety and reliability. This morning, the contractor approached the landslide sites, cleared rocks and soil, and conducted a depth survey to prepare for drilling. The units are trying to repair and clear the route within 3 days.

The solution to drilling the mountain was proposed after two days of Bai Gio tunnel, the section through Ca pass collapsed 20 meters long, cutting off the railway line, but the repair work has not been effective. The construction unit has cleared the soil and rocks, installed an iron dome, and sprayed concrete to reinforce the tunnel lining, but when the tunnel was about to be cleared, 50 cubic meters of water continued to flow down.

Bai Gio Tunnel was completed in 1936, the tunnel shell is made of concrete, more than 400 m long, 5 m high, 4 m wide, connecting Phu Yen and Khanh Hoa. Landslides have paralyzed the railway line. Currently, trains from the south must stop at Gia station (Van Ninh district, Khanh Hoa ), trains from the north stop at Tuy Hoa station (Phu Yen). These two stations are more than 40 km apart. After that, the railway industry will arrange cars to transport passengers and goods to continue the journey. More than 160 trips were made to transfer about 6,600 passengers.

In recent days, the railway industry has also mobilized more than 200 workers, two trains, and four small machines into the tunnel to fix the problem.
