Kyodo news agency reported on May 25 that police in Nagano prefecture, Japan, said a man armed with a hunting rifle and a knife killed a woman and two police officers.
Police received an emergency call at around 4:25 p.m. local time about a man stabbing a woman in Nagano City, the capital of Nagano Prefecture. Officers rushed to the scene and were shot.
The suspect was wearing camouflage clothing, a hat, a mask and sunglasses. Authorities urged residents to stay indoors unless there was an emergency, while children at two nearby schools were ordered to take shelter.
The area where the incident occurred has houses scattered among rice fields. A woman in her 40s said children playing outside immediately returned home after being alerted to a man with a gun on the run.
According to police, the suspect is currently holed up in a building in the city. Nagano city officials have urged residents to stay indoors until further notice on social media.
According to CNN, gun violence is very rare in Japan, one of the countries with the lowest gun crime rates in the world due to strict control laws.
In 2018, the country of 125 million people recorded just nine gun-related deaths, compared with 39,740 in the United States that year, according to data from the Sydney School of Public Health in Australia.
