On June 2, the World Health Organization (WHO) announced that negotiations to reach a new global agreement to respond to future pandemics will be completed by 2025 or earlier if possible.
WHO’s 194 member states have been negotiating for two years to create a binding framework for international prevention, preparedness and response to pandemics. The effort was accelerated after the Covid-19 pandemic killed more than 7 million people, devastated economies and crippled health systems worldwide. The WHO had initially aimed to reach an agreement this week, but talks dragged on amid deep divisions between rich and poor countries over issues such as vaccine sharing and response measures. Countries did, however, reach consensus on a revised International Health Regulations (IHR), which would update existing health rules to be legally binding.
In a statement, WHO Director-General Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus said: “The historic decisions taken today demonstrate the shared desire of Member States to protect people from common risk in public health emergencies and future pandemics.”
