According to the plan, in the 2024-2025 Winter-Spring rice crop, the entire Ca Mau province will plant 35,224 hectares, of which the most concentrated area is in the sweetening area of Tran Van Thoi district.
As the main concentrated sweetening area of Ca Mau province, this year's plan is for Tran Van Thoi district to have a production area of more than 28,950 hectares of winter-spring rice crop. According to the crop calendar, there will be 2 sowing periods, the first period will take place from September 20 to October 10, 2024 for high mounds, areas without closed dikes to store fresh water on site, areas with the possibility of water shortage at the end of the season and areas arranged to produce 2 rice crops and 1 color crop. For the remaining areas, it will take place from October 20 to December 10, 2024.
According to the Hydrometeorological Station of Ca Mau province, rainfall tends to decrease and is likely to end in the last days of November. In the face of this situation, the People's Committee of Tran Van Thoi district directed relevant sectors, the District Production Steering Committee, and the People's Committees of communes and towns to focus on directing, monitoring, guiding, and supporting farmers to speed up the progress of sowing the Winter-Spring rice crop, ensuring that sowing will be completed by December 10.
With the forecast that the rainy season may end early at the end of November 2024, the People's Committee of Tran Van Thoi district has directed specialized agencies and the People's Committees of communes and towns to focus on guiding people to zone land improvement, prepare agricultural materials and rice seeds, and when conditions are suitable, pump water for immediate sowing. In addition, the People's Committee of Tran Van Thoi district also requires communes and towns to take measures to effectively manage and use water reserves on the river and canal systems, limiting the discharge of water from the freshwater area. Regularly monitor and update information on weather forecasts and early warnings so that people can promptly respond and be proactive in production, and adjust plans and sowing schedules if necessary. Strengthen propaganda and mobilize people not to sow the third rice crop, to ensure enough water for the winter-spring rice crop in the district, limit water shortages, affect irrigation works, and collapse roads like previous years.
According to the Department of Agriculture of Tran Van Thoi district, as of November 25, 2024, the whole district had planted nearly 20,000 hectares of winter-spring rice; the remaining area was mobilized by specialized agencies and local authorities to focus on cleaning the fields, reinforcing the embankment system to prepare for pumping and draining water to speed up the planting progress.
Following the recommendations of the authorities, for many days now, farmers in many places in Tran Van Thoi district have been pumping water to plant rice. This year, farmers have agreed on the time to pump water and plant the winter-spring rice crop simultaneously to take advantage of and maximize costs while still protecting and saving the common water source.
A resident of Tran Van Thoi town said: "This winter-spring crop, we divided into groups to plant rice, to create favorable conditions for pumping and draining water. For now, households in groups with closed embankments will plant rice first; for households bordering other hamlets and villages, when conditions are suitable, they will plant rice simultaneously." In Khanh Loc commune, Tran Van Thoi district, people planted rice later (last year it was October 3rd of the lunar calendar) due to heavy rain in early October. Now that the planting has been completed, the rice area is growing well.
