The case of a candidate complaining about taking 20 minutes to do the literature test: "No student is at a disadvantage"

On the afternoon of September 30, speaking with Dan Tri reporter, Mr. Nguyen Van Hieu, Director of the Department of Education and Training of Ho Chi Minh City, proposed a solution to the case of "Candidates complaining about losing 20 minutes to do literature test because the supervisor signed wrongly".

According to Mr. Hieu, after verifying with the leader of the Nguyen Du High School examination site, it was found that an invigilator signed the wrong box on the exam paper in exam room 2,500 of this examination site.

Specifically, during the literature test of the 2024 high school graduation exam (morning of June 27), after about 10 minutes of the test, the invigilator discovered that he had mistakenly signed in the marking box on the test paper.

The invigilator then arbitrarily distributed the exam papers to all the candidates in the room. The two invigilators reported the incident to the invigilator outside the exam room and the incident was reported to the head of the exam site.

At that time, the head of the examination site requested the invigilator of this examination room to return the old exam papers to the candidates in the examination room, without adding extra time to the candidates because it did not have much impact.

However, the head of the examination site did not know that the candidates had been given and took the test on new papers, so some students took the test on new papers and some took the test on old papers.

The Director of the Department of Education and Training of Ho Chi Minh City affirmed that in this case, there was a disadvantage for the candidates in the 2,500 exam room, especially affecting their psychology while taking the exam.

Regarding the handling plan, Mr. Hieu said that in order to ensure maximum benefits for candidates in room 2,500 in the literature exam, after organizing the exam marking in the normal form (2 independent examiners), the Department of Education and Training of Ho Chi Minh City will have a joint marking team to review all the exam papers of this room.

"Ensure that no candidate is disadvantaged in terms of rights," Mr. Nguyen Van Hieu affirmed.

The Department Director also admitted his shortcomings for allowing errors in the exam supervision and will take disciplinary action against the departments involved in this incident.

Specifically, the Department will take disciplinary action against the two invigilators, the head and deputy head of this examination site. The head of this examination site is responsible for not closely monitoring the examination room with the incident, not knowing that the examination room had issued new exam papers to the candidates.

A high school teacher in Ho Chi Minh City with many years of experience in exam supervision shared that in this situation, the two exam supervisors did not come up with a suitable solution.

"The invigilator can completely report the incident to the head of the examination site, continue to let the candidates take the test and make a record of the unusual incident to handle after the exam, without affecting the rights and general psychology of the candidates," this person said.

In the 2024 high school graduation exam, Ho Chi Minh City has 162 exam sites. Nguyen Du High School has 30 exam rooms with 720 candidates. This is also an exam site where independent candidates take the exam.

As reported by Dan Tri newspaper, in room 2,500, the examination site of Nguyen Du High School (District 10, Ho Chi Minh City), an incident occurred in the literature exam on the morning of June 27, for the 2024 high school graduation exam.

While the candidate was taking the literature exam, the invigilator gave him a new exam paper and asked him to copy the answer from the old exam paper. The reason was that supervisor 1 mistakenly signed in the marker's box on the exam paper. This caused the candidate to waste time in getting a new exam paper and copying the answer from the old exam paper to the new one, affecting his test-taking mentality.

According to the candidates' feedback, the invigilator came down to ask the examination board for permission to make up for 20 more minutes of time. But then, the candidates received a notice that they could not make up the time because it was the invigilator's fault, not the examination board's fault.
