The case of a shipper whose account was locked because of 1,000 VND on the 10th grade Literature exam in Khanh Hoa

On June 5, candidates in Khanh Hoa entered the 10th grade entrance exam for public high schools for the 2023-2024 school year. Literature is the first subject, in essay format. Candidates take the Literature test in 120 minutes.

In the Reading section, the test quoted a passage from an article published in the Vietnamese Women newspaper:

"The story of the shipper and the girl receiving the goods also revolved around 1,000 VND. Because he did not have change, the shipper automatically rounded up to 1,000 VND when paying the customer. The girl thought this was a dishonest act. The two argued back and forth and ended with the girl notifying the delivery app, and the shipper's account was locked.

1,000 stands in this story as a tinder that stimulates the ego of both sides. One person does not accept being considered a liar because of 1,000. Another person does not accept being right but being considered a loser. Standing on the line between reason and emotion, 1,000 is too small to distinguish right from wrong, but too big to hurt each person's self-esteem.

The exam gives 4 requirements to candidates:

Question 1, point out 2 words borrowed from European languages ​​used in the excerpt. In question 2, the candidate reads the excerpt carefully to determine the cause of the argument between the shipper and the girl receiving the goods. Question 3, state the effect of the comparative rhetorical device used in the following sentence: "1,000 stands in this story as a tinder that stimulates the ego of both sides". Question 4 requires the candidate to state his personal opinion on the relationship between people, is it necessary to clearly distinguish right from wrong and why?

Ms. Bui Thi Bao Ngoc, Master of Literature Theory and Teaching Methodology, currently a teacher at the High School of Educational Sciences, assessed the exam as being relatively suitable and not challenging. Although there were few open-ended questions and the ability to classify candidates was not high, it still met the requirements of the 10th grade entrance exam structure.

"With the reading and comprehension part, the reading materials are current and close to real life. The test questions are quite interesting, stimulating students' interest in doing the test, promoting their thinking, capacity, and skills in evaluating social issues. This helps them express their personal opinions and move towards a positive and civilized lifestyle," she emphasized.
