"Weigh" all harsh weather
It is no coincidence that FIFA chose Dunedin, a remote city entering the cold winter season on New Zealand's South Island, to host some World Cup matches. Because the city, once New Zealand's most populous city, owns a world-class stadium called Forsyth Barr.
Forsyth Barr Stadium in Dunedin (New Zealand)
Over the past 12 years, the 30,000-36,000-seat stadium has hosted a wide range of sporting events and concerts, regardless of the adverse weather conditions in Dunedin. That’s because Forsyth Barr is the only permanent covered stadium in the world with a natural grass pitch.
The roof of the Forsyth Barr Stadium covers and hugs all four sides. That makes this stadium like a “greenhouse”, ensuring that fans or athletes can fully participate in the sporting event, regardless of the rain, wind or snow outside. According to the research, the roof of the Forsyth Barr Stadium is built with transparent ETFE material supplied and installed by Vector Foiltec, the same material used at the Allianz Arena in Munich and the Bird’s Nest in Beijing.
ETFE is a transparent polymer originally developed for the aerospace industry. The double-skin ETFE cladding is approximately 90% transparent and is the only transparent material with UV protection. At 20,500m2 covered in ETFE, it is the largest ETFE-coated structure in the Southern Hemisphere. ETFE is lighter than glass (1% by weight) but extremely strong – it can support 400 times its own weight and stretch 3 times its length – meaning it will withstand the wind and snow of Dunedin’s cold southern climate.
Pride in Dunedin
Forsyth Barr is a stadium located within the vast University of Otago complex. Forsyth Barr is located against the mountains and facing the sea. No matter which way you go in Dunedin, locals and visitors can still see the stadium standing proudly.
Going deeper into Forsyth Barr Stadium, the infrastructure system and functional rooms also meet the requirements from FIFA. The press conference room and the reporter room are all spacious. Not to mention, on the top floor, Forsyth Barr Stadium also has a restaurant to serve VIP guests who come to watch football.
Dining tables are cleverly arranged, close to the transparent glass wall that extends across the entire A stand. Upscale fans can enjoy wine, steak… and look down at the field to watch high-quality matches at the World Cup.
On August 1, Forsyth Barr Stadium will host the match between the Vietnamese women's team and the Netherlands. This is also the last match of the Vietnamese women's team at the 2023 Women's World Cup.
