'With a new face, there are months when I run shows without a single day off'

Singer Duc Phuc is the clearest proof of his meteoric rise to stardom in Vietnamese showbiz thanks to successful plastic surgery in mid-2017. At the time of his coronation as the champion of The Voice 2015 , despite his good voice and limited appearance, Duc Phuc received a lot of criticism from the audience.

But since his successful "face-lift", having a new, more handsome and attractive appearance has helped Duc Phuc's singing career flourish until now.

Duc Phuc became known to the audience when he participated in the Voice of Vietnam contest in 2015 and became the champion of the contest. At that time, singer My Tam's student was constantly criticized for his appearance. However, thanks to My Tam's encouragement and support, Duc Phuc became more confident when appearing on the stage of the contest.

After being crowned, with many questions about his somewhat limited appearance compared to his colleagues in the arts, whether he intended to have plastic surgery. At that time, Duc Phuc optimistically believed that his ugly appearance but possessing a unique, emotional singing voice would help him become different in the showbiz world which already had many beautiful artists.

Sharing with VTC News reporters about his journey of self-change, Duc Phuc confided: “ I believe that being different always has its own appeal. Despite many people warning that ugly singers will have difficulty succeeding, will not be able to survive in the harsh world of showbiz and the public always demands that beauty must go hand in hand with elegance.

After being crowned, I found myself standing at the first stop on the showbiz avenue. I am ugly but I will never stop striving, and sooner or later life will reward me. If my singing voice is a gift from God, then there will surely be a place for me to use that precious gift from God. So let everything be natural... ”

When the buzz of the 2015 Voice of Vietnam award subsided, Duc Phuc gradually lost shows due to limitations in his appearance.

However, the path to showbiz did not go as Duc Phuc had thought. The male singer once shared that what he would never forget in his career was when he released his first single, Duc Phuc and his team wanted him to appear on the cover of some magazines to promote and "heat up" his image. But when he raised this issue with the magazines, Duc Phuc was repeatedly rejected.

Duc Phuc confided: “ A woman working at a magazine editorial office frankly told me, “Sorry, I have to look good on the cover of a magazine.” I was heartbroken. Even the cover of a magazine is out of reach, let alone shortening the path to the stage. Then I remembered the not-so-good “prophecies” about my fate in the showbiz world: singers with bad looks will have a hard time succeeding .”

The difficulties due to physical limitations gradually became apparent in his career path. Duc Phuc sadly realized that his initial assumptions that he would conquer the public with his singing voice, that listening was the main thing and looking was secondary, seemed a bit unrealistic.

At that time, Duc Phuc had his teeth straightened, worked hard to exercise, and dieted to have a slim body, but it seemed that these changes still did not help to shorten the gap between Duc Phuc and the audience. " I was increasingly unsold, so unsold that I once intended to leave Saigon, return to Hanoi to study at university, and when invited to sing, I would "go". The inferiority complex about my unattractive appearance still stuck with me like a shadow ."

After much "bitterness" due to his limited appearance, the male singer decided to change his appearance through plastic surgery when participating in the Transformation Journey contest.

Duc Phuc believes that if he is lucky enough to have a ticket called beauty, his dream musical journey will be able to overcome the invisible barrier in many people's hearts. The barrier that often makes the voice want to reach the heart must go through the "beauty checkpoint".

In the summer of 2017, when he was almost 21 years old, Duc Phuc made perhaps one of the biggest decisions of his life: changing his face!

Before going into surgery, Duc Phuc wrote a letter to the audience because right after his coronation, he had affirmed that he would not undergo plastic surgery but would choose to conquer the audience with his voice. However, after 2 years of artistic activities, perhaps Duc Phuc has seen the right path, that if he wants to go further in showbiz, he must have a more attractive appearance.

After a 5-hour cosmetic surgery, including chin augmentation, nose surgery, cutting the middle of the lips to create depth in the philtrum... all of Duc Phuc's previous physical flaws were improved.

After a month of plastic surgery, at the end of July 2017, the image of Duc Phuc's new face was revealed for the first time, causing a huge "earthquake" in Vietnamese showbiz.

At that time, the music video of Duc Phuc covering the song Anh Nang cua anh with a new look was suddenly released and spread rapidly on social networks. Duc Phuc said that the "heat" of this new image was even greater than the time he was crowned The Voice of Vietnam .

“ The result of suddenly becoming the center of media attention is a flood of news and images about me. I suddenly realized that this new face seemed to be more attractive to the media and the public than the trophy and title of champion of The Voice Vietnam 2015 that My Tam and I had to work so hard to achieve. This is funny and really worth thinking about, isn’t it?”

When Duc Phuc's image covered social networks and many online newspapers, he started to be in demand again.

“It was as if the plane that had been slowly running on the runway suddenly accelerated and soared into the sky. I had never expected such a busy situation.

With a busy work schedule across three regions, I am constantly "traveling". I still remember the old days when my appearance was not attractive, there were months when I had so few shows that I sat around for 30 days. Now, with a new face, I run shows for 30 days without a day off .

When his beauty improved, the number of show invitations, invitations to be advertising representatives, MV views, fan base, salary increased, invitations to participate in TV shows, sponsorships for MVs... everything increased. Before the surgery, Duc Phuc only performed, now he has many new jobs such as filming commercials, being a brand representative, posting Facebook advertising posts...

“ But the most valuable thing is self-confidence. In Vietnamese, the word self-confidence is only different from “self-deprecation” by one letter “n”. Yet to overcome that one letter gap, I went through countless pains and worries before deciding to have surgery .”

Duc Phuc is more confident when taking photos, performing, filming music videos, communicating with people... He gradually gets rid of his self-consciousness and reaches self-confidence, which is also the journey to find emotional freedom.

Since his plastic surgery, Duc Phuc's life has turned a new page. In addition to saving money to make music videos, the male singer has more opportunities to take care of his family. Duc Phuc quickly bought a house, a car and helped his parents pay off all their debts.

At present, Duc Phuc owns a large amount of assets. Notably, he owns a 120 m2 house worth 10 billion VND bought in 2021. Previously, he also owned 2 other apartments in Ho Chi Minh City and Hanoi and a car worth more than 4 billion VND.

In addition to releasing quality music products, Duc Phuc confided that he also has to regularly "renovate" periodically to keep his appearance from "deteriorating". Sharing about his career journey, the male singer affirmed that for him, "changing his face" means changing his life!
