The final round of the Sustainable Society Initiative Competition, jointly organized by the International University (VNU-HCM) and the Department of Education and Training, took place on the morning of October 20.
Here, 8 teams from high schools in Ho Chi Minh City and Dong Thap presented and defended their projects.
Nguyen Huu Huan High School (HCMC) participated in the final round with 3 projects: "Using durian peel mixed with clay to make clay powder" (after the expiration date of this clay powder, it can decompose quickly to make fertilizer to improve the soil); "Improving traditional diapers" (using banana stems and coconut fiber and the outer shell of the diaper can be separated, washed and dried to limit waste from diapers, safe for users, and protect the environment); "Using natural ingredients such as garlic and orange peel to make incense cones" (limiting toxic fragrances from chemicals in incense that help repel mosquitoes naturally, safe for health and protect the environment).
Meanwhile, the team from the Gifted High School (VNU-HCMC) brought the project "Using seashells to create water-permeable concrete blocks to prevent flooding in some locations in Thu Duc City".
Nguyen Quang Dieu High School for the Gifted (Dong Thap) brought 2 projects "Using leftover food to make organic fertilizer, making compost bins to avoid environmental pollution during the composting process"; "Collecting old batteries, classifying and processing each component in the battery in Cao Lanh City, Dong Thap Province"...
At the final round, the jury also commented on the projects regarding safety in use, cost, quality, etc.
Dr. Tran Thi Ngoc Diep, Head of the Center for Innovation and Technology Transfer of the International University, Co-Head of the Organizing Committee, said that through this competition, students will develop innovative thinking and raise awareness of issues related to the environment and society where they live and study. Moreover, it will raise their awareness and knowledge of the 17 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) of the United Nations.
