Ms. Hu has been married to a man named Wang since 2011. The couple has a daughter. Their marriage has been troubled since then, mainly over the issue of raising their child. The arguments between the couple have been increasing.
In October 2022, after an argument, Hu left the shared home in Zhengzhou, Henan and has been living separately ever since. At the end of 2024, she filed for divorce in court.
She asked for custody of the children, a division of joint property and compensation from her husband for her dedication to housework, being a full-time wife and mother.
Ms. Hu said she had to quit her job and spend all her time taking care of her children, family, and doing housework. Her husband did not fulfill his family obligations.
She believes that her contributions deserve recognition and compensation. She asked her husband to pay her 50,000 yuan (more than 176 million VND) in compensation.
The court recently made its final decision, the SCMP reported on March 18. Ms. Hu was awarded custody of her child. Wang must compensate Hu more than 250,000 yuan (about 880 million VND), five times the amount she initially requested.
The compensation Mr. Wang had to pay Ms. Hu was so high because she had worked hard doing housework all these years.
Fu Saiya, who attended the trial, said: "The verdict surprised Mr. Wang. We explained to him that housework is invisible, but that does not mean it has no value. Husband and wife must share housework equally."
The court's ruling has attracted a lot of attention on social media in China, with many expressing strong support.
"The court's wise decision"; "I'd rather go to work than stay home and do housework all day"... netizens commented. Some people think that men also have important roles in the family, such as being a "driver" or "bodyguard".
