An item that continuously sets records, ranking 3rd in export turnover

Fruit and vegetable exports are currently behind wood, wood products and aquatic products in the agricultural, forestry and aquatic products group; ranking 8th out of 45 key export items of the country.

Notably, in the first months of the year, while the export of the two "trump cards" of the agricultural sector, aquatic products and wood, decreased sharply, the export of fruits and vegetables continuously set new records. Many more types of Vietnamese fruits were "exported".

The export value of fruits and vegetables up to the first half of July has nearly exceeded the export value of fruits and vegetables of about 3.16 billion USD for the whole year of 2022. Of which, durian, mango, dragon fruit, and banana are the products contributing the largest turnover.

If in the remaining months of the year, fruit and vegetable exports maintain the average turnover achieved in the past 7 months, it is expected that the whole year of 2023 will reach nearly 5.4 billion USD, an increase of 59.2% (2 billion USD) compared to 2022.

This figure is very likely because the potential of the fruit and vegetable export market is wide open, especially in markets that have signed free trade agreements (FTAs) with Vietnam. In the first months of the year, Vietnamese fruit and vegetables were present in 27 major markets, with 15 markets reaching over 10 million USD, especially 3 markets reaching over 100 million USD (China, USA, Korea).

In addition, recently, the Animal and Plant Health Inspection Service (APHIS) of the US Department of Agriculture has sent a letter to the Plant Protection Department (Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development) informing about the US opening its market to Vietnamese coconuts (without fiber). The results show that Vietnamese coconuts meet the US requirements for processed products and have a negligible risk of spreading plant pests. Therefore, Vietnamese producers can start exporting coconuts to the US.

The Vietnam Fruit and Vegetable Association believes that the opportunity to export fruits and vegetables to China - one of the largest markets for Vietnamese fruits and vegetables - is very open as recently, Vietnam and China have signed many export protocols for agricultural products. In particular, durian exports to the Chinese market "exploded" with a turnover of up to 1.5 billion USD.

Banana exports are also very promising. Thanks to the protocol signed with China in November 2022, banana export turnover is expected to increase by hundreds of millions of USD this year. In addition, if we take into account the increased demand for banana imports from Japan, Korea, the Middle East, etc., in 2023, banana exports could bring in revenue of 700-800 million USD.

From now until the end of the year, it is forecasted that in the third and fourth quarters, there will be nearly 7.6 million tons of major fruits that need to be consumed such as mango, banana, dragon fruit, pineapple, orange, longan, durian, jackfruit, avocado... Thus, it can be seen that the fruit supply is and will be very abundant, well meeting export orders in the coming time.

In addition, due to better output, the agricultural sector has recently changed its crop structure. Currently, the area of fruit trees nationwide has reached over 650,000 hectares; many types of fruits and vegetables are being newly planted, processed, and exported on a fairly large scale such as durian, lychee, pineapple, etc.

To facilitate the export of fruits and vegetables, the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development is stepping up the issuance of codes for growing areas and packaging facilities for businesses. In addition, it encourages cooperatives and businesses to strongly shift their agricultural production mindset to agricultural economics, and promote the development of ecological, green, and circular agriculture...

Experts recommend that, in addition to promoting the issuance of growing area codes, localities also need to control those codes well to minimize the fraud of growing area codes, affecting the brand of Vietnamese exported fruits and vegetables.

Vietnam Trade Office in Germany warns businesses exporting to EU market

In the context of a number of recent commercial frauds, a representative of the Trade Office of the Vietnamese Embassy in Germany recently said that the main cause of recent frauds is not thoroughly researching information about partners; often not meeting directly but only transacting via email, phone...

This agency gives some notes to businesses in trade cooperation, for example, when exporting goods to the European market in general and Germany in particular, it is necessary to check the legal status and credit status, delivery capacity and reputation of foreign partners before signing contracts; through other trading partners, service companies or Vietnamese diplomatic representative agencies abroad to conduct further verification of partners.

Businesses should limit the use of risky payment methods such as wire transfer (TTR), collection (D/A, D/P), limit or do not advance payment for large value goods. In addition, be vigilant and cautious when making electronic transactions online, when there are signs that partners have changed their email addresses, beneficiaries, etc.

Enterprises also need to have full provisions to protect their rights in the contract, especially provisions on dispute resolution agencies, complaints, to avoid unfavorable situations for enterprises when disputes arise. Regarding payment, enterprises should pay attention to understanding international principles and practices, consider choosing reasonable payment methods and conditions, ensuring benefits for enterprises.

Enterprises need to pay attention to and master the technical standards of their partners for imported goods, especially regulations related to food hygiene and safety and regulations related to corporate social responsibility.

Some recent trade frauds include the cashew nut case in Italy, the cinnamon case, cashew nut export to the United Arab Emirates (UAE), the import of goods from Mexico to Vietnam...

Vietnam is still absent from the top Halal food exporting countries.

Despite having export capacity and brand in the top 20 in the world, Vietnam is not yet on the list of 20-30 typical Halal food suppliers globally, showing the need to accelerate to seize opportunities and open up this potential market.

This information was given at the workshop "Islamic culture and prospects for Halal industry development in Vietnam" on August 14 in Hanoi.

Dr. Le Phuoc Minh, Director of the Institute of African and Middle Eastern Studies, said that the Halal food and beverage industry is currently growing in scale in the world market. Halal food suppliers are mainly non-Muslim countries, typically Brazil, India, Australia, France, New Zealand, and Hungary.

The humanity of Halal affects a large number of people around the world, making the Halal market increasingly expanding to non-Muslim countries. The size of the Halal market is growing rapidly, expected to reach 3,200 billion USD by 2025, with an annual growth rate of 6.2%. The average GDP per capita of Muslims is estimated to increase by 4.2% by 2024. In addition to Muslims, consumers around the world are increasingly interested in Halal food because of its high quality, produced in a management system that ensures strict hygiene and safety.

“The Halal food industry is not only about production and processing but also related to raw materials and logistics services. Therefore, developing the Halal industry will promote the development of other supporting fields and services,” Dr. Le Phuoc Minh analyzed.

Clarifying Vietnam's opportunities in the Halal food industry, Dr. Dinh Cong Hoang, Institute of African and Middle Eastern Studies, said that among the top 20-30 countries exporting Halal products in the world, Vietnamese businesses are absent.

"While Vietnam has strengths in agricultural, forestry and fishery products, export capacity and brands in the top 20 in the world. This is a very regrettable point when Vietnam is leaving open this large and potential market," Mr. Hoang emphasized.

According to Dr. Dinh Cong Hoang, the opportunity for Vietnam to participate in the global Halal supply chain can be seen in its geographical location near Muslim countries, with potential for export products. In addition, Vietnam has new generation, high-quality FTAs with demanding markets (EU, US, Japan, etc.) as a foundation to access the Halal market.

Currently, not many Vietnamese businesses have a good understanding of Halal, Halal certification is still difficult, and businesses need to invest a lot of money to get certified.

Recognizing these difficulties, Mr. Hoang proposed to study the signing of FTAs between Vietnam and the Halal market, specifically CEPT with the UAE. Establish a Halal management agency in Vietnam and implement the issuance of Halal certification to businesses.

Mr. Hoang said that it is necessary to establish a Halal ecosystem, attract FDI enterprises and domestic Halal investment, promote the export of food products, agricultural products, cosmetics, tourism, garments, and footwear. Along with that, it is necessary to promote digital transformation and e-commerce to export to the Halal market.
