According to a VNA reporter reporting from Ireland, within the framework of an official visit to Ireland, on the morning of February 29, Foreign Minister Bui Thanh Son had talks with Irish Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs and Defense Micheál Martin.
Welcoming the visit of Minister Bui Thanh Son, the first official visit to Ireland by a Vietnamese Foreign Minister in 20 years, Deputy Prime Minister, Minister of Foreign Affairs and Defence of Ireland Micheál Martin congratulated Vietnam on its socio-economic achievements and highly appreciated Vietnam's position and role in the region and the world; affirming that Ireland considers Vietnam one of its leading important partners in the Asia-Pacific region and that the Irish people have special affection for Vietnam.
Pleased to visit Ireland in the context of the friendship and cooperation between the two countries achieving positive results, Foreign Minister Bui Thanh Son affirmed that Vietnam always attaches importance to the relationship with Ireland and wishes to enhance political trust and further deepen multifaceted cooperation between the two countries in the coming time, for the goal of sustainable development, peace, cooperation and development in the region and around the world.
At the meeting, the two sides highly appreciated the achievements of bilateral cooperation in recent times and agreed on directions and measures to strengthen relations in the coming period.
In the political-diplomatic field, the two ministers agreed to continue promoting delegation exchanges and contacts at all levels, especially at high levels, improving the effectiveness of parliamentary cooperation, effectively implementing cooperation mechanisms, enhancing close coordination and mutual support at multilateral forums such as the United Nations and ASEAN-EU cooperation mechanisms.
Mr. Micheál Martin also hopes that Vietnam will soon open an Embassy in Ireland to further strengthen bilateral relations.
Regarding economic-trade-investment cooperation, an important pillar in bilateral relations, the two sides agreed to continue to coordinate closely and make the most of the benefits brought about by the Vietnam-EU Free Trade Agreement (EVFTA).
Minister Bui Thanh Son suggested that Ireland encourage businesses to invest in Vietnam in areas where Ireland has strengths and is consistent with Vietnam's socio-economic development orientation such as digital transformation, energy transformation, high-tech agriculture, etc.
Ireland emphasized that Vietnam is a leading trade partner of Vietnam and there is still a lot of room for bilateral cooperation in this field; affirmed that it will actively consider Vietnam's request to accelerate the ratification process of the Vietnam-EU Investment Protection Agreement (EVIPA) and support the European Commission (EC) to soon remove the IUU "yellow card" for Vietnamese seafood products and requested Vietnam to facilitate the import of high-quality agricultural products and food from Ireland.
Minister Bui Thanh Son thanked the Irish Government for considering Vietnam a priority partner in its development cooperation policy; highly appreciated the effectiveness of Ireland's aid projects for Vietnam in recent times and expressed his hope that Ireland would continue to provide ODA to Vietnam, especially in areas such as human resource development, support for the disadvantaged, and overcoming the consequences of bombs and mines.

Regarding security and defense cooperation, the two sides agreed to promote policy consultation, train Vietnamese soldiers to participate in the United Nations peacekeeping force, increase experience sharing, and coordinate the fight against organized and cross-border crime as well as high-tech crime.
The two sides also agreed on measures to promote cooperation in areas such as education and training, creating favorable conditions for Vietnamese students to study in Ireland; expanding employment opportunities for Vietnamese workers; easing entry visa regulations to facilitate tourism and people-to-people exchanges; and discussing cooperation possibilities in new areas with great potential such as renewable energy, digital economy, response to climate change and rising sea levels.
The two sides also discussed regional and international issues of mutual concern, agreeing to support multilateralism, international order based on international law, and the settlement of disputes by peaceful means in accordance with the United Nations Charter.
Regarding the East Sea issue, the two sides shared their stance on ensuring peace, stability, security, cooperation and development in the region, resolving disputes by peaceful means on the basis of international law and the United Nations Charter, and respecting the 1982 United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea (UNCLOS).
On this occasion, Foreign Minister Bui Thanh Son and Irish Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs and Defence Micheál Martin signed an agreement to strengthen the close cooperation mechanism between the two Foreign Ministries in the coming period./.
