Speaking at the opening of the exhibition, Minister of Foreign Affairs Bui Thanh Son said that 70 years ago, the Geneva Agreement on the cessation of hostilities in Vietnam was signed. With this victory, for the first time in history, Vietnam's basic national rights of independence, sovereignty, unity and territorial integrity were officially affirmed in an international treaty and recognized and respected by the countries and parties attending the Conference.

At the same time, this victory opened up a new strategic situation for Vietnam to move towards fully realizing the goals of peace, national independence, national unification and building socialism.

Minister of Foreign Affairs Bui Thanh Son delivered a speech at the opening of the exhibition.

"The Geneva Agreement, together with the Dien Bien Phu victory that "resounded throughout the five continents and shook the world," created great inspiration and encouragement for the national liberation movement across the five continents, for independence, freedom, peace, democracy, progress and social justice; opening the way for the collapse of old colonialism around the world," Minister Bui Thanh Son emphasized.

According to the Minister, in 2024, there will be many activities and events to celebrate the 70th anniversary of the signing of the Geneva Agreement with profound significance. In particular, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs will coordinate with the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism to organize an exhibition with the theme "The Geneva Agreement on the Cessation of Hostilities in Vietnam - A Historical Milestone of Vietnamese Revolutionary Diplomacy".

With about 120 photos, documents and artifacts, including documents and artifacts about the Geneva Agreement introduced to the public for the first time, the Exhibition recreates the process of negotiation, signing and implementation of the Geneva Agreement, thereby helping the masses and international friends understand more fully and deeply the stature and significance of the Geneva Agreement, and have a more vivid visual perception of the indomitable will of our people in the struggle for national liberation, national unification, building and defending the Fatherland as well as the unique and distinctive character and character of Vietnamese diplomacy in the Ho Chi Minh era.

At the Exhibition, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs also introduced the photo book "The 1954 Geneva Agreement - A historical milestone of the Vietnamese revolution". This book includes more than 250 photos and documents related to the negotiation, signing and implementation of the Geneva Agreement, collected from the archives of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and many domestic and foreign agencies, organizations and individuals.

According to Minister Bui Thanh Son, the exhibition and photo book, together with activities to celebrate the 70th anniversary of the signing of the Geneva Agreement, the 70th anniversary of the Dien Bien Phu Victory, the 70th anniversary of the liberation of Hanoi and the 80th anniversary of the founding of the Vietnam People's Army held in 2024, will contribute significantly to arousing more strongly patriotism, national pride and the motivation and aspiration of today's generation to continue to firmly step on the path of innovation, national development and national defense.

"Commemorating the 70th anniversary of the signing of the Geneva Agreement with practical activities such as today's Exhibition is an opportunity to spread more widely the nation's tradition of "remembering the source of water", the deep gratitude and infinite gratitude of today's generation towards beloved President Ho Chi Minh and previous generations, including the veteran revolutionaries who participated in the negotiations and signing of the Geneva Agreement, who devoted their whole lives to the peace, independence, freedom and unification of the Fatherland.

Through the Exhibition and Photo Book, we once again affirm to international friends that Vietnam always remembers and appreciates the valuable support and assistance of international friends and peace-loving people around the world for the cause of national liberation, national development and national defense of the Vietnamese people," Minister Bui Thanh Son added.

At the same time, Minister Bui Thanh Son affirmed that through many struggles against foreign invaders, Vietnam highly values ​​the value of peace, always upholds and respects the basic principles of the United Nations Charter and international law, and contributes its utmost to peace, national independence, democracy, development cooperation and social progress in the world.

"Promoting the nation's heroic historical tradition, continuing to thoroughly grasp and creatively apply Ho Chi Minh's ideology, style, and diplomatic art and the valuable lessons of the Geneva Agreement, the Diplomatic sector promotes the pioneering role of foreign affairs in maintaining a peaceful, stable, and favorable environment for the country's rapid and sustainable development, for the goal of a rich people, a strong country, democracy, fairness, and civilization," said Minister Son.

The exhibition opens from July 15 to September 5, 2024 at the National Museum of History, Phan Chu Trinh Street, Hoan Kiem District, Hanoi.
