Vietnam is one of Canada's top three priority partners in the region.

On July 14, within the framework of the 56th ASEAN Foreign Ministers' Meeting (AMM-56) taking place in Jakarta, Indonesia, Foreign Minister Bui Thanh Son met with Canadian Foreign Minister Melanie Joly.

At the meeting with Canadian Foreign Minister Melanie Joly, the two Ministers appreciated the positive developments in the Vietnam-Canada Comprehensive Partnership over the past years.

The two Ministers agreed that after 50 years, bilateral cooperation is at a turning point, requiring new directions in line with the international and regional situation and the level of relations.

Minister Bui Thanh Son welcomed the Canadian Government's Indo-Pacific Strategy that promotes the central role of ASEAN; agreed that the implementation of the Strategy will open up new cooperation opportunities between Canada and ASEAN in general, and Vietnam in particular, including ensuring the implementation of the 1982 UNCLOS.

Minister M. Joly affirmed that Vietnam is one of Canada's top three priority partners in the region; agreed that the two sides will promote the exchange of high-level delegations and all levels, exploiting each other's economic and trade potential more effectively, through the implementation of the Comprehensive and Progressive Agreement for Trans-Pacific Partnership (CPTPP); study the possibility of expanding cooperation in the fields of green energy, clean energy, ocean cooperation, etc.

Minister Bui Thanh Son suggested that Canada continue to facilitate and provide more scholarships for Vietnamese students; at the same time, support Vietnamese citizens living, studying and doing business in Canada to stabilize their lives, contributing to the development of Canada as well as the Vietnam-Canada friendship.
