Vietnam signs communiqué establishing diplomatic relations with 194th country

VOV.VN - At the headquarters of the Permanent Mission of Vietnam to the United Nations in New York, Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Bui Thanh Son and Malawian Foreign Minister Nancy Tempo witnessed the signing ceremony of the joint communiqué establishing diplomatic relations. With the establishment of diplomatic relations with Malawi, Vietnam has diplomatic relations with 194 countries.
On the occasion of attending the Future Summit and the High-level General Debate of the 79th United Nations General Assembly in New York, the United States, Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs Bui Thanh Son had meetings with British Foreign Secretary David Lammy and Algerian Foreign Minister Ahmed Attaf. At the meeting with the British Foreign Secretary, Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs Bui Thanh Son congratulated Mr. David Lammy on his appointment as Secretary of State for Foreign Affairs and Development of the United Kingdom; thanked the UK for supporting 1 million pounds to help the Vietnamese people overcome the consequences of storm No. 3 (storm Yagi). Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs Bui Thanh Son highly appreciated the UK's recognition of Vietnam's market economy status; informed that in June 2024, Vietnam ratified the UK's accession document to the Comprehensive and Progressive Agreement for Trans-Pacific Partnership (CPTPP).

Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Bui Thanh Son highly appreciated the UK's coordinating role within the framework of the Just Energy Transition Partnership (JETP) and asked the UK to continue supporting Vietnam in implementing the Resource Mobilization Plan announced at COP28; expressing that as the coordinator of ASEAN-UK relations, Vietnam will work with the UK to further deepen the ASEAN-UK partnership. Minister David Lammy affirmed that the UK attaches importance to strengthening the Strategic Partnership with Vietnam; will continue to support Vietnam in developing a sustainable economy.

Minister David Lammy suggested that the two sides continue to promote cooperation in the fields of defense and security and in issues of migration and immigration management. The two Ministers agreed to continue to promote the effective implementation of the Vietnam - UK Free Trade Agreement (UKVFTA), make the most of opportunities from the CPTPP Agreement to promote bilateral economic - trade and investment relations; welcome the positive developments in the ASEAN - UK partnership in recent times; affirm support for maintaining peace, stability, freedom of navigation and aviation security, and resolving East Sea issues by peaceful means, on the basis of international law and the 1982 UNCLOS.

Receiving Algerian Foreign Minister Ahmed Attaf, Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Bui Thanh Son congratulated Algeria on successfully organizing the presidential election; believing that under the leadership of President Abdelmajud Tebboune, Algeria will continue to achieve important achievements in socio-economic development. The Deputy Prime Minister and Minister affirmed that Vietnam always attaches importance to the traditional friendship with Algeria; expressed joy at the positive developments of bilateral relations; suggested that the two sides increase delegation exchanges, continue to closely coordinate in multilateral forums, especially at the United Nations and the Non-Aligned Movement; and asked Algeria to create favorable conditions for Vietnamese enterprises to invest and do business in Vietnam. The Algerian Foreign Minister reiterated his deep affection for Vietnam; stating that the relationship between the two countries is a traditional, brotherly friendship. Minister Ahmed Attaf expressed his admiration for Vietnamese leaders, especially President Ho Chi Minh and General Vo Nguyen Giap; shared the opinion of Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Bui Thanh Son on the need for the two sides to strengthen the good political cooperation as well as expand and deepen economic-trade cooperation (currently at 241 million USD), investment, energy, oil and gas, and people-to-people exchange; wished to visit Vietnam as soon as possible. The two Ministers agreed to continue to coordinate closely to implement the results of the 12th Meeting of the Vietnam-Algeria Intergovernmental Committee and soon organize the 4th Political Consultation.

At the meeting after the signing ceremony, the heads of the two Foreign Ministries expressed their delight at the two countries officially signing the Joint Communique on establishing diplomatic relations. Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs Bui Thanh Son affirmed that this is a historic milestone in the relationship between the two countries; suggested that the two sides carry out delegation exchanges and bilateral contacts through channels to enhance understanding, political trust and expand cooperation opportunities.

The Deputy Prime Minister affirmed that Vietnam is ready to share development experience with Malawi, especially in Vietnam's strengths such as economic development, innovation and integration, agriculture, fisheries, education, etc., and is ready to coordinate with Malawi to seek funding from third parties (such as FAO, EU, etc.) for tripartite agricultural development cooperation projects in Malawi. Malawian Foreign Minister Nancy Tempo agreed that the bilateral relationship has officially entered a new page; expressed her readiness to promote cooperation in all fields with Vietnam. Malawi is a country located in southern Africa, bordering Zambia to the west, Mozambique to the southeast, and Tanzania to the northeast; with an area of ​​118,484 km2, a population of 23.38 million people (in 2024), and a GDP of 11.24 billion USD (2024). With the establishment of diplomatic relations with Malawi, Vietnam has diplomatic relations with all African countries and the vast majority of countries in the world.
