Vietnam highly appreciates the choice of "Women and the Economy" as a cross-cutting priority of APEC.

On May 20, 2024, information from the Multilateral Trade Policy Department (Ministry of Industry and Trade) said that within the framework of the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation Forum (APEC), the first Joint Conference between APEC Trade Ministers and Women Ministers took place on May 17, 2024 under the chairmanship of Ms. Angela Teresa Hernández - Minister of Women and Vulnerable Populations of Peru and Ms. Elizabeth Galdo - Minister of Foreign Trade and Tourism of Peru.

The conference was attended by 21 APEC member economies, the APEC Business Advisory Council (ABAC), the World Trade Organization (WTO) and the APEC Secretariat.

At the First APEC Trade and Women Ministers' Joint Meeting, Ministers discussed Women's Economic Empowerment through Trade in the Asia-Pacific Region.

At the Conference, the Ministers discussed the content of Women's Economic Empowerment through Trade in the Asia-Pacific region, focusing on two contents: the main obstacles and ways for economies to promote women's economic empowerment in trade; and APEC initiatives to promote women's empowerment in trade in the Asia-Pacific region.

In APEC cooperation, in 2019, the Ministers adopted the La Serena Roadmap on Women and Inclusive Growth to 2030, which prioritizes the following areas: Empowering women through access to capital and markets; strengthening the female workforce; improving women's access to leadership positions at all levels of decision-making; supporting women to improve their education, training and skills; enhancing women's economic power through data analysis and collection.

The Trade Policy Department said that in recent years, APEC members have emphasized the implementation of measures to promote gender equality and enhance women's economic empowerment. In particular, APEC has supported women to participate in developing new technologies, technologies for the future; supported policy reforms to eliminate the digital divide; strengthened public-private partnerships to remove digital barriers for women; enhanced gender equality in the global value chain (committed to empowering women economically through access to capital and markets, supporting women's business capacity...); promoted women's transition from the informal to the formal economic sector.

At the Conference, the Ministers shared and emphasized the important role of women in the economic development process towards sustainable and inclusive growth, and shared good practices in economic empowerment for women.

Representing the Vietnamese delegation, Director of the Multilateral Trade Policy Department (Ministry of Industry and Trade) Luong Hoang Thai highly appreciated APEC's inclusion of the content on "Women and the economy" as one of its priorities over the past many years.

Speaking at the Conference, the Vietnamese delegation highly appreciated the joint efforts of APEC member economies in making the topic of “Women and the Economy” one of the priorities over the past years. Vietnam highly values ​​the role of women in areas such as agriculture, environment, education, economic development, etc., contributing to hunger eradication, poverty reduction, and economic stability.

"The Vietnamese Government has developed specific initiatives such as the Plan to support women's start-ups for the 2017-2025 period, the Plan to support cooperatives managed by women and create jobs for women for the 2022-2030 period, and many other initiatives," the Vietnamese delegation informed.

Vietnam welcomed Peru for hosting the first Joint Meeting of Trade Ministers and Women Ministers of 21 APEC economies. At the same time, it emphasized that this is a meaningful activity in promoting and supporting women's participation in the regional and global economy, demonstrating APEC's strong determination to realize the enhancement of the role of women and the economy. Vietnam pledged to join hands with APEC members in efforts to promote women's economic empowerment for sustainable development and integration of the region. The Vietnamese delegation said that the Conference successfully concluded at noon on May 17, 2024 with the issuance of a Joint Statement.
