Continuing the program of the 31st session of the National Assembly Standing Committee, on the afternoon of March 18, National Assembly deputies questioned Minister of Foreign Affairs Bui Thanh Son regarding cultural diplomacy and promoting Vietnam's image abroad.
Many important marks in cultural diplomacy
Delegate Tran Thi Thu Hang (Dak Nong) asked the Minister of Foreign Affairs to inform about the results of implementing the cultural diplomacy strategy in promoting the culture, image of the country and people of Vietnam to promote tourism, socio-economic development, and build the brand of Vietnam in general and of localities in particular?
Responding to questions, Minister of Foreign Affairs Bui Thanh Son affirmed that the Cultural Diplomacy Strategy for the 2021-2030 period had been issued by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in consultation with the Government.
This is a further development of the Cultural Diplomacy Strategy for the 2011-2020 period, and also has some new contents.
The Minister said that cultural diplomacy not only helps promote the image of the country and people of Vietnam to the world, but also absorbs the cultural quintessence of the world through cultural exchange.
In that spirit, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs has proactively cooperated with international organizations, especially the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO).
Currently, in UNESCO there are 7 most important mechanisms, Vietnam is trusted by international friends to be elected to 5 most important positions, including the World Heritage Committee.
“This is a joint cooperation mechanism for us to coordinate with international friends in enhancing cultural cooperation,” the Minister emphasized.
At the national level, cultural diplomacy helps create a friendly impression with friends; foreign affairs activities of high-ranking leaders in recent times have also been highlighted by cultural diplomacy activities.
The Minister said that recently, localities across the country have paid attention to building brand images as well as promoting their local images in festivals, which have been highly appreciated by international friends.
Promoting substantive and effective cooperation between Vietnam and UNESCO
Responding to the question of delegate Pham Thi Kieu (Dak Nong) about the preservation and promotion of heritage, Minister Bui Thanh Son said that cultural heritages in particular and UNESCO titles in general recognized by the international community are not only valuable assets, reflecting the cultural identity of the Vietnamese nation and people, but also have global value.

Therefore, promoting images of this heritage aims to promote soft power, enhance the image of our country and people in the international arena, and more importantly, contribute to socio-economic development.
“The Ministry of Foreign Affairs will propose policies to promote substantive and effective cooperation between Vietnam and UNESCO and also ask UNESCO for guidance. We will also fully inform localities about what needs to be done to preserve and promote the value of the heritage when it is recognized, serving long-term and sustainable socio-economic development,” said the Minister.
Along with that, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs also invited many high-ranking leaders of UNESCO to visit, combining the organization of the first UNESCO conference on preserving and promoting cultural heritage.
In addition, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs supports localities in building dossiers to request continued recognition of Vietnam's heritage in the correct form for approval. At the same time, it continues to promote and introduce Vietnam's heritage to international friends as measures that have been implemented in the past.
Implementing activities to honor President Ho Chi Minh abroad
Delegate La Thanh Tan (Hai Phong) asked Minister Bui Thanh Son to share the highlights in spreading the ideology, moral style, and good qualities of the Vietnamese people through honoring President Ho Chi Minh abroad. In the coming time, what solutions will the Ministry have to improve the effectiveness of this work?
Responding to questions, the Minister of Foreign Affairs stated that the legacy that President Ho Chi Minh left for our country and people is both universal and timeless, and has received attention from many countries. UNESCO has also honored him as a National Liberation Hero and an Outstanding Cultural Man.
In the coming time, the Ministry will continue to carry out activities to honor and glorify President Ho Chi Minh through activities such as coordinating with friendly countries to build Ho Chi Minh Square, Ho Chi Minh Boulevard, Ho Chi Minh Monument, naming streets, etc.
At the same time, organize exchanges on Ho Chi Minh's ideology, morality, and style. Besides, there are conferences, seminars, and publish Uncle Ho's works in many languages./.
