On December 21 in Hanoi, General Nguyen Tan Cuong, Chief of the General Staff of the Vietnam People's Army and Deputy Minister of National Defense , met with Senior Lieutenant General Álvaro Lopez Miera, Minister of the Cuban Revolutionary Armed Forces.
General Nguyen Tan Cuong welcomed Senior Lieutenant General Álvaro Lopez Miera and the delegation of the Ministry of the Revolutionary Armed Forces of Cuba to Vietnam to attend the ceremony to celebrate the 80th anniversary of the founding of the Vietnam People's Army, the 35th anniversary of the National Defense Day and the Vietnam International Defense Exhibition 2024. He emphasized the special significance of the visit in the context that the two countries have just celebrated the 64th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations, the 68th anniversary of the landing of the Granma ship and the founding of the Cuban Revolutionary Armed Forces.

General Nguyen Tan Cuong affirmed that Vietnam and Cuba are two socialist brotherly countries with a traditional and close friendship. That relationship, which has been tempered by all the challenges of the times, has increasingly developed positively, deepened and become substantive in many fields, becoming an exemplary, pure, loyal relationship, rare in international relations.
Expressing sympathy for the difficulties facing the Cuban people, General Nguyen Tan Cuong affirmed that the Party, State, Army and people of Vietnam are always ready to support Cuba within their capacity. He emphasized that defense cooperation is an important part of the bilateral relationship, achieving many positive results under the attention of senior leaders of both sides. The General Staff of the Vietnam People's Army will continue to direct agencies and units to effectively implement the agreed cooperation contents, in accordance with the conditions and capabilities of each side.

Senior Lieutenant General Álvaro López Miera expressed his impression of the achievements of the Vietnam People's Army, especially through the Vietnam International Defense Exhibition 2024. He also sent his congratulations on the occasion of the 80th anniversary of the founding of the Vietnam People's Army.
The General also provided an overview of the situation in Cuba, and affirmed that the close relationship between the two countries' armies is a valuable legacy founded by President Ho Chi Minh and President Fidel Castro. He hoped that in the coming time, the two countries' armies would continue to promote increasingly practical and effective cooperation.
