At the training session, the Vietnam U19 team gathered 30 out of 35 players on the call-up list. The remaining 5 players will join the team in the near future, including: Nguyen Dang Duong, Nguyen Cong Phuong (The Cong - Viettel), Thai Ba Dat, Nguyen Bao Long (PVF) and Ho Huu Hung (Bohemians Praha, Czech Republic).
Head coach Hua Hien Vinh said that the coaching staff was somewhat passive in the training plan because many players were busy with transfer exams, and at the end of the season, teams also kept players to compete. However, before entering this training session, the Vietnam U19 team had a training session and played quality friendly matches with strong opponents at the International U19 Tournament in Weinan, China last June.
“Through this tournament, the coaching staff has added good pieces to the squad. The current situation is not too worrying, we will make adjustments to help the team perform at their best in the upcoming 2024 Southeast Asian U19 Tournament,” said coach Hua Hien Vinh.
According to plan, the Vietnam U19 team will have about 2 weeks to prepare for the 2024 Southeast Asian U19 Championship.
Coach Hua Hien Vinh said that during this training period, the coaching staff will focus on improving the weaknesses that the team revealed in the tournament in China, not only in fixed situations in defense but also in attack, if fully utilized, it will bring advantages.
In this training session, the U19 Vietnam team has the participation of midfielder Ho Huu Hung, who plays for Bohemians Praha Club, Czech Republic. However, this overseas Vietnamese player will not be able to return home to join the team until July 5.
When asked about Ho Huu Hung's case, coach Hua Hien Vinh said that the coaching staff assessed the player's quality as relatively good through video recordings of matches. The remaining task is to wait for Ho Huu Hung to return to training, integrate, and adapt to the team. "Hopefully, Huu Hung will have good integration steps. If he cannot prepare for the tournament in time, there will still be later training sessions, aiming for the 2025 U20 Asian Qualifiers," coach Hua Hien Vinh said.
The 2024 Southeast Asian U19 Championship will take place in Surabaya, Indonesia from July 17 to July 29, 2024. According to the draw results, the Vietnam U19 team is in the same group with Myanmar, Australia and Laos.
Evaluating the 3 opponents in the same group, coach Hua Hien Vinh said: “The group of U19 Vietnam is quite strong. U19 Australia won the championship in 2020, did not participate in 2022 and has returned this time. This is a strong candidate. In addition, U19 Laos is also an unknown, 2 years ago they won the runner-up position. Overall, the group is quite competitive and U19 Vietnam will have to work very hard.”
