This year, Ho Chi Minh City will recruit 2,203 additional 10th grade students for 36 public high schools that have not met their enrollment targets. Among them, 3 high schools are in the top group: Nguyen Thuong Hien High School (Tan Binh District), Phu Nhuan High School (Phu Nhuan District) and Le Quy Don High School (District 3).
MOST OF THE TOP SCHOOLS HAVE FILLED THE ADDITIONAL QUOTAS
Commenting on the situation of additional recruitment for grade 10 this year, the examination staff of the Ho Chi Minh City Department of Education and Training said it was more positive than last year. The recruitment rate for the second round reached about 80%, with some schools receiving 100% of their quota.
Parents and candidates complete admission procedures for their children in grade 10.
At Dao Son Tay High School (Thu Duc City), the target for additional enrollment in grade 10 is 60 students, but the school has received 64 applications. Ms. Hoang Thi Hao, the school's principal, said that the school will propose to the Department to enroll 64 students. According to Ms. Hao, the school's additional enrollment score is 13.5 points or higher. Of the 64 applications received, only 6 applications were at 13.5 points, the rest were at this score or higher.
Or at Phan Dang Luu High School (Binh Thanh District), the additional enrollment quota this year is 15 with a score of 16.25 points. Ms. Tran Thi Thom, the school's principal, said that 16 students registered, and the school will propose to the Department to accept 1 more student (due to the same score) compared to the initial quota.
Similarly, at Long Truong High School (Thu Duc City), if the previous school year needed to recruit 90 additional students, only about 15 students registered, this year the recruitment reached about 90%. Specifically, the school leader said that the school announced to recruit 102 additional students, 90 students registered and currently has enough staff for 2 10th grade classes.
At Thanh Da High School (Binh Thanh District), the additional enrollment target is 47, but nearly 40 students have registered...
NEW REGULATIONS FACILITATE SCHOOLS IN SUBURBAN AREAS
Explaining the positive signs of this year's additional 10th grade enrollment, Ms. Hoang Thi Hao said that this year the Department has new regulations, creating conditions for schools to meet their enrollment quotas and students to have the opportunity to study at public schools.
Accordingly, the condition for participating in the additional recruitment of grade 10 is that students do not pass any admission wishes to public high schools and must have grade 10 exam scores in 3 subjects: math, literature, foreign language and priority points (if any) greater than or equal to the standard score of the 3rd choice of the public high school they want to register for admission.
For students who have studied at secondary schools in the districts of Can Gio, Nha Be, Binh Chanh, Hoc Mon, Cu Chi and Thu Duc City, if they register for schools in the same area as their secondary school, the total entrance exam score of the candidate will be considered according to the standard score of the first choice of the public high school they want to register for.

TOP SCHOOLS RECEIVED NO APPLICATIONS
In contrast to the positive signals in additional admissions of the following top schools, all three top high schools did not receive any additional applications.
According to Thanh Nien Newspaper reporters, although Nguyen Thuong Hien High School (Tan Binh District) needed to recruit 40 students, no students registered for admission. This situation also occurred at Le Quy Don High School (District 3), the school needed to recruit 15 more students but after the application deadline, the school leaders said they had not received any applications. Similarly, Phu Nhuan High School (Phu Nhuan District) needed to recruit 12 students but no students came to register.
The vice principal of a high school said that the additional recruitment sources of top schools are scarce, even without students. Because, only students with stable academic ability can confidently choose top schools as their first choice. Meanwhile, when registering for 3 choices for grade 10, students chose according to the criteria of decreasing school rankings. Therefore, when not admitted to the first choice at the top schools, students were admitted to the following choices with lower scores. Therefore, according to this vice principal, it is almost impossible for students to have high grade 10 exam scores and not be admitted to any choice.
Specifically, according to the regulations on additional recruitment, students must achieve the standard score of their third choice or higher, while Nguyen Thuong Hien School is always the school with the highest standard score in the city. This year, if students want to be considered for additional grade 10 admission to the school, they need to have a grade 10 exam score of at least 26 points, which is quite a high score, and it is difficult for students to achieve this score and not be admitted to grade 10.
"Besides, students with good academic performance have many opportunities such as studying abroad, studying at international schools, and high-quality private schools, so it is normal that top schools have difficulty recruiting students," the vice principal affirmed.
Sharing about the fact that the school has no students registering for additional admission, Mr. Lam Trieu Nghi, Principal of Nguyen Thuong Hien High School, said that before proposing additional admission quotas, the school's academic affairs department contacted parents of students who were admitted but did not enroll to grasp the situation and specific reasons. Among them, there were students who had passed the entrance exam to the Gifted High School (Ho Chi Minh City National University), students studying abroad, students who had studied at a private secondary school and took the entrance exam to public grade 10 to "experience"...
Mr. Nghi said that according to the school's statistics, out of the 40 students who were admitted but did not enroll, 80% were students from a private high school in Ho Chi Minh City. When the students were admitted, their parents came to inquire and learned that the public school did not organize boarding, so they refused to enroll them.
Top scorer of 10th grade exam chooses to study at non-public school
In addition, according to Mr. Lam Trieu Nghi, there are also students who choose to study in non-public schools due to their family's needs and career orientation. In particular, the choice and decision of the valedictorian of this year's 10th grade exam, Nguyen Minh Anh, who chose to study at Le Thanh Tong Secondary and High School (Tan Phu District), must be mentioned.
Sharing with Thanh Nien Newspaper reporter, Mr. Nguyen Pham Dai, Nguyen Minh Anh's father, said that his son wanted to study medicine, so his family and he himself had researched to choose a learning environment that was suitable for his career orientation. At the same time, the services and amenities of the private school were suitable for the family's current conditions.
For the above reasons, Mr. Lam Trieu Nghi said that in the next year's admission season, the school will propose to the Department of Education and Training that after determining the admission score and having a list of admitted students, the Department will filter statistics to see how many students are studying at private schools. From there, it is possible to make additional provisions, creating opportunities for students with close to the admission score from the beginning, avoiding the situation where the school does not recruit enough students and many students lose their opportunities.
