In Ho Chi Minh City, with over 16,000 students each year proactively pursuing vocational training or studying abroad, the Department of Education has decided to reduce the number of public high school places by nearly 5,700 this year.
This year, Ho Chi Minh City's 113 public high schools are enrolling over 71,000 students, a decrease of nearly 5,700 compared to last year. In contrast, the city increased the number of places available in public high schools in the two previous years.
More than half (64 schools) reduced their enrollment quotas. Many schools reduced their quotas by more than 200 students, such as Binh Chieu High School, Luong Van Can High School, Tran Phu High School, Vinh Loc B High School, Ho Thi Bi High School, and Phuoc Kien High School. The remaining schools reduced their quotas by approximately 45-135 students, equivalent to 1-3 classes.
Only 19 schools increased their enrollment for 10th grade, with the most common increase being around 45 students. Meanwhile, the city expects nearly 116,300 students to graduate from junior high school, an increase of 5,000 compared to last year. In theory, about 45,000 students will not have the opportunity to enter public high school.
Mr. Le Hoai Nam, Deputy Director of the Ho Chi Minh City Department of Education and Training, said that the allocation of enrollment quotas for 10th grade in public schools ensures the streaming of students according to government regulations. Accordingly, about 70% of students graduating from junior high school will enter the public high school system. The remaining students will continue their studies at private schools, continuing education centers, or vocational schools.
Based on years of experience and data, approximately 16,000-17,000 graduating students proactively choose vocational training, private schools, or studying abroad. Therefore, the Department anticipates that this year around 102,300 students will register to take the entrance exam for public high schools. 70% of this number, or more than 70,000 students, will be admitted.
Mr. Nam further explained that last year, at the end of the public high school entrance exam period, schools still had 3,000 vacant spots. Even with an additional admission round, only 1,000 more students applied.
"If we determine the enrollment quota based on the number of graduating students, it will create unrealistic targets. Therefore, this year, the Department has set a more precise target for public high school enrollment," Mr. Nam explained.
He added that the enrollment quota for 10th grade is initially determined by each school based on its facilities and teaching staff, and then adjusted by the Department based on the overall situation of the locality.

According to the city's plan, the 10th grade entrance exam will take place on June 6th and 7th, consisting of three subjects: Mathematics, Literature (120 minutes), and Foreign Language (90 minutes). Candidates applying to specialized or integrated classes will take an additional exam in their respective specialized or integrated subject, lasting 150 minutes.
Students can register for a maximum of 3 preferences for general high schools and 6 preferences for specialized or integrated classes.
Specifically for Thạnh An island commune in Cần Giờ district, admission to 10th grade is done through a selection process.
