On July 24, Tuoi Tre Online talked with Mr. Nguyen Van Phuc, a seafood business in Hai Phong, about processed shrimp, value-added goods of other countries and Vietnam.
“Recently, countries have started to join the shrimp processing race. For example, Ecuador has a value-added processed production line of about 91 tons of raw whiteleg shrimp per day. India is the same, with a strategy of investing in deep processing as a “weapon”.
Ecuador and India have very cheap raw shrimp prices, not to mention their geographical location is close to major markets such as the EU and the US.
China even has up to 1,000 shrimp processing factories, from importing raw shrimp to serve domestic use, but China buys a lot of boiled Vietnamese tiger shrimp," Mr. Phuc acknowledged the situation.
Assessing that Vietnamese shrimp has a place in many markets that favor deeply processed products such as Japan, Korea, Australia, UK, US, EU, etc., Mr. Phuc explained:
“Vietnamese shrimp is processed in a wide variety; the general processing level of Vietnamese shrimp enterprises is highly appreciated by foreign markets, which is a great competitive advantage.”
Vietnam's outstanding value-added shrimp products include breaded shrimp, fried shrimp, seasoned shrimp, butterfly shrimp, skewered shrimp, tempura shrimp, nobashi shrimp, shrimp dumplings, ginger shrimp dumplings, etc.
Previously, "shrimp king" Le Van Quang - chairman of Minh Phu Seafood Corporation - also admitted that Vietnam processes many value-added products that Ecuador and India cannot process, or can process little, so Vietnam has an advantage in processed shrimp.
Meanwhile, a leader at VASEP said that if India and Ecuador intend to export processed shrimp to other markets, it may take another 5-10 years to reach the current level of shrimp processing of Vietnam.
“In particular, Vietnamese high-value products in the Japanese market still maintain a better competitive advantage than other suppliers such as India and Ecuador. Not to mention that consumers are increasingly saving time, so convenient and easy-to-prepare products are increasingly gaining attention,” he said.
Currently, value-added processed shrimp products account for 40-45% of the total annual shrimp export value.
The project to develop the seafood processing industry in the 2021-2030 period aims to make Vietnam a seafood processing center and among the top 5 countries in the world by 2030.
Q3-2024, demand will recover, shrimp export prices will increase
According to VASEP, in the first 6 months of the year, Vietnam's shrimp export value reached nearly 1.6 billion USD, up 6%. In June alone, it increased higher than previous months, reaching 344 million USD, up 5% over the same period in 2023.
Of which, shrimp exports to China and Hong Kong reached 328 million USD, to the US reached 303 million USD, to Japan and South Korea reached 229 million USD and 149 million USD respectively.
VASEP assessed that according to market rules, from the third quarter of 2024 onwards, importers will increase purchases to prepare supplies for the year-end holidays. Inventory problems and transportation difficulties will be reduced, demand will recover and prices will increase again.
