Coach Marcelo Bielsa is the fourth coach at Copa America 2024 as of July 1, to be punished with a 1-match ban for the above reason, after coaches Scaloni (Argentina), Ricardo Gareca (Chile) and Fernando Batista (Venezuela). Mr. Bielsa will not be able to coach his team in the important match when Uruguay meets the host team USA at Arrowhead Stadium in Kansas City, at 8:00 on July 2 in the final round of Group C.
The Uruguay Football Federation's announcement explains the punishment of coach Marcelo Bielsa: "Coach Marcelo Bielsa has been suspended for 1 match for bringing the team onto the field late compared to the scheduled time. Including in the second half of the matches against Panama (winning 3-1) on June 24 and Bolivia (5-0) on June 28, with a delay of about 1 minute and 30 seconds.
Therefore, coach Marcelo Bielsa will not participate in press activities and other events on the day of the match (against the US team). This task will be transferred to assistant coach Pablo Quiroga (also Argentine).
The absence of coach Marcelo Bielsa will not actually affect the Uruguay team much, as they currently have 6 points and are firmly in the chance of going to the quarterfinals and winning the group. Meanwhile, the host team USA (3 points, second in Group C), is competing for the remaining place to go to the next round with Panama (also with 3 points), the team will meet Bolivia at the same time on July 2 in Florida.
Similarly, before that, coach Scaloni of the Argentina team was also banned from directing the match against Peru (won 2-0) in the final round of Group A. But luckily, he was not affected much, thanks to the replacement assistants such as Walter Samuel and Pablo Aimar who were fully capable of directing the home team's matches.
However, other coaches such as Ricardo Gareca of the Chilean team or Fernando Batista (Venezuela) have expressed dissatisfaction, saying that the regulations of the South American Football Confederation (CONMEBOL) are too strict and rigid.
Not only did CONMEBOL impose a suspension on coaches for bringing their teams onto the field late during the 2024 Copa America, it also fined each federation with coaches who violated the regulations $15,000.
