Tuna exports to the UK market reverse decline Vietnam's canned tuna exports grow again |
According to the Vietnam Association of Seafood Exporters and Producers (VASEP), in 2022, Belgium was the third largest tuna import market of Vietnam in the EU with a growth rate of 65% compared to 2021. However, in 2023, tuna exports to this market continuously decreased under the impact of inflation. And by the end of 10 months of 2023, Belgium was no longer one of the three largest tuna import markets of Vietnam in the EU.

Specifically, citing statistics from Vietnam Customs, VASEP said that tuna exports to Belgium have been continuously decreasing. In the first 10 months of 2023, tuna exports to this market reached more than 9 million USD, down 48% compared to the same period in 2022.
Compared to last year, exports of frozen tuna meat/loins coded HS0304 - Vietnam's main export item to Belgium - decreased sharply, down by 55%. Meanwhile, exports of processed and canned tuna increased by 7%.
According to VASEP, Vietnam is currently the fourth largest source of tuna outside the bloc for the Belgian market, after Ecuador, the Philippines and Ivory Coast. In 2023, Belgium will reduce tuna imports from Vietnam and Ecuador, but increase tuna imports from the Philippines and Ivory Coast.
According to Eurostat statistics, Belgium's canned tuna imports in the first 8 months of 2023 increased by 13%, while frozen tuna meat/loins imports decreased by 49% over the same period.
Analyzing the causes, VASEP representative said that it was due to the impact of inflation affecting the consumption demand of Belgian people. In addition, the Covid-19 epidemic and the subsequent purchasing power crisis have changed the consumption habits of Belgian people.
" Belgian consumers go to traditional restaurants less often and go to fast food restaurants more often because the dishes there are cheaper," VASEP informed, adding that Belgian consumers now often divide their shopping, buy smaller quantities and switch to cheaper products to adapt to the new reality. Therefore, the demand for cheap canned tuna products in this market has increased.
Currently, according to VASEP, Vietnamese tuna is still under great competitive pressure and regulations and technical barriers are still and will continue to cause difficulties in the Belgian market. Seafood exporting countries will continue to compete more fiercely with some European markets tending to impose stricter regulations and criteria for tuna imported into this market.
In addition, despite enjoying tax incentives from EVFTA, the price of Vietnamese tuna is higher than that imported from other suppliers. At the same time, EU tuna importers always prioritize importing tuna products within the EU despite the higher price. These are major challenges in the coming time when businesses want to increase their tuna market share in the EU market.
