Still worried about power shortage despite output growth of more than 4.6% compared to last year

Báo Thanh niênBáo Thanh niên02/11/2023

According to information from EVN, the total electricity output produced and imported by the entire system in 2023 is estimated to reach 280.6 billion kWh, an increase of 4.6% compared to 2022. With the drastic and close direction of the Prime Minister and ministries, branches, and the efforts of EVN and its member units, EVN representatives affirmed that the electricity supply situation in the last months of this year will be guaranteed.

Regarding the electricity supply situation in 2024, on November 2, EVN said that the group and its member units have proactively calculated and drastically implemented solutions to provide adequate electricity. Specifically, managing and operating plants safely and stably; minimizing incidents, especially coal-fired thermal power plants in the North during the peak dry season of 2024. EVN and its member units will conduct comprehensive and overall inspections and reviews of the units; perform periodic maintenance and repair according to plan; promptly repair and replace equipment... to ensure the availability and readiness of the plants.

By the end of this year, EVN and its member units will complete major repairs and put into operation 17 power generators with a total capacity of 5,200 MW.

At the same time, power plants also carry out major repairs and regular repairs of generators to ensure progress and quality; have the fastest solution to power source problems within the scope of management, ensuring that generators are capable of operating at maximum capacity; at the same time, implement solutions to overcome the decline in generator capacity due to factors such as environmental temperature, cooling water, low tides, etc.

It is expected that by the end of this year, the Group and its member units will basically complete the maintenance and repair of generators, ready for power generation in the 2024 dry season. Of which, major repairs will be completed and 17 generators with a total capacity of more than 5,200 MW will be put into operation.

There is a plan to optimally mobilize power sources, combined with increasing maximum transmission from the Central region to the North to ensure that hydroelectric reservoirs are stored at the highest water level by the end of 2023, preparing for power generation in the dry season of 2024.

In addition, EVN said it will soon report to the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development on a plan to economically and effectively use the amount of water discharged from hydropower reservoirs to serve the winter-spring crop in 2023-2024, to serve power generation in the dry season, with the goal of saving and maintaining at 3.5 billion m3 (equivalent to 2023). To achieve this goal, EVN recommends that localities need to have a proactive plan to prepare water for agricultural production, minimizing dependence on the amount of water discharged from hydropower reservoirs in the North.

In October, EVN said it had signed a memorandum of understanding with the Vietnam National Coal and Mineral Industries Group and the Northeast Corporation to ensure sufficient coal supply to meet the mobilization needs of EVN's power plants and power generation corporations; and is continuing to work with the Vietnam Oil and Gas Group (PVN) and the Vietnam Gas Corporation (PVGas) to have a plan to ensure gas for gas-fired power plants in the Southeast region in 2024.

Regarding the power grid, EVN said it has directed the National Power Transmission Corporation (EVNNPT) to focus on maximum resources and accelerate the progress of the 500 kV line project, circuit 3, from Quang Trach to Pho Noi, including 4 component projects. The Prime Minister has approved the investment policy for the 500 kV Nam Dinh I - Thanh Hoa power plant line project. EVN and EVNNPT are urgently coordinating closely with ministries and branches to complete legal procedures and implement the next steps to start construction of the remaining 3 component projects under the direction of the Prime Minister.

At the same time, EVN is focusing on accelerating the progress of power source and grid projects, especially grid projects serving the connection of electricity imports to Laos, works serving the connection of power sources...
