According to Neowin , in September, Valve had a large-scale ban on DOTA 2 players who engaged in Smurfing behavior, at which time more than 90,000 accounts were punished. But it seems that this storm has not stopped, in the Frostivus 2023 update, the company continues to deploy the strongest ban wave ever.

In the gaming world , Smurfing is a term used to describe high-level gamers who intentionally create new accounts to play with new or weaker players. Therefore, Smurfing is considered an unfair gaming practice.

Valve wrote on the DOTA 2 blog: "If you're on the Naughty List, we have good news for everyone else and bad news for you, because this year is going to be a bloodbath. We've continued to invest in monitoring player behavior, both manually and automatically. Over the past few weeks, there's been a more aggressive ban wave, with tens of thousands of Smurf accounts banned in a single day."

Now, when starting the game, DOTA 2 players will receive a special gift called 'Frostivus Gift'. Depending on the player's behavior, the gift can be a ban or warning if they are on the Naughty List, or a free set of items if they are on the Nice List.

Unlike before, even professional DOTA 2 players are at risk of being banned. Because after discussing the use of Smurf accounts by professional gamers, Valve has also decided to apply sanctions to this group of players.

In addition to Smurf account users, DOTA 2 players who engage in toxic behavior and speech in-game are also being punished.
