Agricultural prices today May 11: Early season lychee prices are high, quality is not good
A survey in Hanoi shows that many markets and fruit shops are selling early-season lychees for 90,000 - 120,000 VND/kg. The price is sky-high but the lychees are not of good quality as the skin is still green and the flesh is still sour and astringent.
Early season lychee prices range from 90,000 - 120,000 VND/kg |
According to a trader in Huyen Son commune, Luc Nam district ( Bac Giang ), some areas of early-ripening lychees in Hai Duong and Quang Ninh have begun to be harvested. In Hai Duong, the wholesale price of lychees at the garden fluctuates between 50,000 - 60,000 VND/kg. In Quang Ninh, although the sweet egg lychees are not very delicious, the garden owner is selling them for 70,000 - 80,000 VND/kg.
This year, the lychee crop failed, the entire lychee garden only had the area planted with the U Hong variety with the highest yield of about 3 - 5 tons. Of which, the Thanh Ha hybrid lychee growing area lost 80% of its yield; the Luc Ngan lychee growing area was even more miserable, estimated to yield only a few dozen kilograms. Local gardeners suffered heavy losses this year, with the fewest losing a few tens of millions, the many up to hundreds of millions of dong.
Dak Lak is also harvesting early ripening lychees. This is a variety of U Duong lychee that was brought from Tan Yen district (Bac Giang) to be planted many years ago. The quality of lychees grown in Dak Lak cannot be compared to the lychee growing area in Bac Giang, but the advantage of this locality is the hot and sunny climate, so the lychees ripen early and the early season price is always higher than the main season.
Vinh Long: Farmers growing Japanese purple sweet potatoes make big profits
Many farmers in Vinh Long province said that sweet potato prices are currently high, with growers earning about 400,000 VND per quintal.
Specifically, farmers sell Japanese purple sweet potatoes at a price of 800,000 - 850,000 VND/quintal (1 quintal = 60kg) (an increase of 100,000 - 150,000 VND/quintal compared to the same period last year. After deducting expenses, growers make a profit of about 400,000 VND/quintal. Meanwhile, milky white potatoes, paper white potatoes, and pumpkin potatoes are purchased by traders at a price of 180,000 - 280,000 VND/quintal.
Regarding the reason for the price increase, many traders said that the area of sweet potatoes of all kinds planted has decreased compared to previous years, especially the area of Japanese purple sweet potatoes. Along with that, it is not yet the peak harvest season, so the prices of all types of potatoes have increased.
According to the Department of Agriculture and Rural Development of Binh Tan district, up to now, the district has planted 513 hectares of sweet potatoes, down 286 hectares compared to the same period last year. Recently, due to unstable potato prices, people have switched to growing rice, vegetables or growing fruit trees.
