In his resignation letter published on X on September 16, Mr Breton said that Ms Von der Leyen had asked France a few days ago to withdraw his name from the list of candidates for the European Commission "for personal reasons" in exchange for "a portfolio that is considered more influential".

“Based on these latest developments – further evidence of questionable management – I have to conclude that I can no longer carry out my duties at the Board of Commissioners,” Breton said in the letter.
Each EU member state has a seat on the European Commission. Their political weight and importance vary greatly depending on their portfolio.
Ms Von der Leyen is finalising her list of commissioners for a second term at the helm of the regulator, which is expected to be presented to the public this week.
Mr Breton, a former business executive, was European Commissioner for Internal Market and Services in his first term, overseeing many of the EU's most important policies, from industrial weapons production to regulating Big Tech.
