During the 15th anniversary of doing business in Laos, Unitel was awarded the First Class Labor Medal by the Lao Government and the Second Class Labor Medal bythe President of the Socialist Republic of Vietnam.
On November 19, 2024, in the capital Vientiane, Star Telecom Company (Unitel), a joint venture between Viettel Group and Lao Asia Telecom of the Lao Ministry of National Defense , celebrated 15 years of business operations in Laos with the theme "Digital transformation, welcoming the future".
After 15 years of operation, Unitel has become the largest telecommunications company in Laos in terms of subscribers, revenue and network infrastructure. Unitel is one of the companies that contributes the most to the budget and is recognized by the Government and the Ministry of Defense of the two countries as a typical successful model of good cooperation between Laos and Vietnam.

Unitel is number 1 in network infrastructure with more than 9,000 BTS stations, including 5,000 4G locations, 42 thousand km of fiber optic cable enough to wrap around the earth, number 1 in coverage with 94% of the entire territory, of which 4G coverage reaches 83%, making Laos one of the countries with the best telecommunications infrastructure in Southeast Asia.
In terms of business, Unitel occupies the No. 1 position in terms of overall market share in the mobile sector with a market share of 57%, fixed broadband with a market share of 58% and e-wallet with a market share of 73%. Unitel is also the No. 1 enterprise in providing IT solutions to the government and enterprises, especially in healthcare, education, energy and cyberspace.
Business is closely linked to social responsibility, Unitel is the second largest tax and budget payer in Laos, and the first in the telecommunications sector. Up to now, Unitel has contributed more than 613 million USD to the state budget, solving the largest employment problem in Laos with nearly 30 thousand workers. The total budget for sponsorship and charity activities is up to 30 million USD.
Unitel is also a pioneer in digital transformation, bringing 4.0 technology to the lives of Lao people, strongly committed to accompanying the Lao Government in digital transformation and building e-Government infrastructure. Platforms such as LaoApp, LaoTV and U-Money e-wallet have brought many modern utilities, helping to improve the quality of life for millions of people. In particular, U-Money e-wallet with more than 1.6 million registered subscribers has contributed to promoting electronic payments in both urban and rural areas, supporting the comprehensive digital transformation process.
In recognition of Unitel's performance and contributions to the telecommunications industry and Laos, at the celebration ceremony, Unitel received the First Class Labor Medal from the Lao Government and the Second Class Labor Medal from the President of the Socialist Republic of Vietnam.

Also within the framework of the celebration, Unitel launched 5G service business, marking a major turning point in the journey of pioneering technology and digital transformation in Laos, becoming Viettel's third market to commercialize 5G in 2024.
