With the goal of transferring scientific and technological advances in seed production and commercial production of vegetables and flowers in greenhouses towards commodities, gradually contributing to changing the production habits of the people, in recent years, Thanh Hoa Agricultural Institute has implemented many activities to transfer science and technology in planting and caring for vegetables and flowers to people in mountainous districts, contributing to increasing income and improving the lives of local people.

Applying science and technology to build a model of vegetable and flower production towards commodities Model of growing gerbera daisies in a greenhouse in Dong Luong commune (Lang Chanh).

Ms. Le Thi Mai - one of the engineers who is always dedicated to transferring science and technology of crops to the mountainous people of Thanh Hoa Agricultural Institute, said: Based on the reality that people in mountainous districts in the province, such as: Muong Lat, Quan Son, Quan Hoa, Lang Chanh, Thuong Xuan... have long encountered many difficulties in agricultural production due to complex terrain and fragmented production land. People mainly cultivate according to traditional methods, lack knowledge of modern farming techniques as well as access to the market in the field of growing flowers and vegetables in greenhouses to create high-value products that bring economic efficiency to producers. From that reality, with the consent of the agency's leaders, she has implemented the Project "Application of science and technology to build a model of vegetable and flower production towards commodity production in some border districts of Thanh Hoa - Hua Phan, Lao PDR".

The project was implemented in Dong Luong commune (Lang Chanh) and Thuong Xuan town (Thuong Xuan), on a total area of over 7,000m2. Participating in the project were 1 cooperative and 1 household, and 200 people were trained in techniques for producing seeds and commercial vegetables and flowers in greenhouses, including the following processes: Chrysanthemum propagation technology by cuttings, rose propagation technology by grafting; mustard green production techniques, growing tomatoes grafted on eggplant roots, producing short-term vegetables (green mustard) according to VietGAP standards; techniques for planting and caring for chrysanthemums, roses, gerberas, etc.

Talking about the initial effectiveness of the model, Ms. Luong Thi Niem in Dong Luong commune said: To successfully produce vegetables and flowers grown in greenhouses, people must strictly adhere to technical requirements, such as: Applying the correct technological processes; caring for and monitoring the growth and development of vegetables and flowers according to the cycle; harvesting and preserving products must be done in accordance with joint ventures and partnerships with restaurants and businesses... The most important thing is that people have access to science and technology, changing traditional agricultural production methods to commodity production methods, thereby contributing to increasing income and improving life.

According to engineer Le Thi Mai, after 2 years of implementing the project, the cooperative and households have produced thousands of chrysanthemum and rose seedlings; and developed technical manuals for vegetables and flowers suitable for production conditions in Thuong Xuan town and Dong Luong commune. From these manuals, people in project localities in particular and mountainous people in general can apply them to commodity production, bringing high economic value.

Through our research, we learned that in order to ensure the effective transfer of techniques for growing and caring for flowers and vegetables in greenhouses to farmers, agricultural engineers are regularly present at production sites to "hold hands and guide", monitor and provide timely technical support to farmers. In addition, the institute also supports farmers in harvesting, preserving and consuming products. Techniques for harvesting at the right time, classifying and packaging products are instructed in detail. The institute also connects with businesses and traders to create stable output for agricultural products. Many households have mastered the techniques, expanding the production area of vegetables and flowers. Income from growing vegetables and flowers is 2-3 times higher than that from traditional rice cultivation. Some areas have formed concentrated vegetable and flower production areas, creating stable jobs for local workers.

However, due to natural conditions, the climate of mountainous districts often has prolonged rains, floods, and water from upstream flows down, significantly affecting the quality of crops. Therefore, in the coming time, Thanh Hoa Agricultural Institute will continue to expand the area of science and technology transfer to farmers in mountainous districts, develop more high-tech vegetable and flower growing models, strengthen links with businesses to consume products for people, build brands for typical vegetable and flower products of the region...

It can be said that the science and technology transfer program of Thanh Hoa Agricultural Institute has been making an important contribution to transforming production methods, increasing income for mountainous people, contributing to sustainable poverty reduction and new rural development in the locality.
