Many benefits from new technology

Over the past 10 years, the application of new technology and new materials in road construction and maintenance has achieved high economic, technical and environmental efficiency, contributing to new technical solutions (in addition to traditional technical solutions) for each specific item and project, thereby saving resources and reducing greenhouse gas emissions.

Mr. Le Hong Diep, Head of Traffic Organization Management Department, Vietnam Road Administration, said that in the construction and maintenance of pavement structures, there are prominent technologies such as: Cold in-place recycling scraping technology that helps to utilize old pavement materials, save resources, reduce emissions, and is environmentally friendly; hot recycled asphalt concrete technology; warm asphalt concrete technology; Microsurfacing thin layer technology in preventive maintenance of pavements, helping to extend the life of pavements.

In addition, there is also semi-soft pavement technology applied at intersections with many heavy trucks, wharves, parking lots, container ports and technology to urgently repair potholes and road depressions during the rainy season with water-reactive cold asphalt concrete to ensure traffic.

Some new materials are also applied such as: Acid asphalt emulsion materials; additives to enhance adhesion of asphalt stone in asphalt concrete production; additives to enhance the properties of asphalt concrete to prevent rutting.

Prominent new technologies and materials related to road slope protection include: High-strength steel mesh installed on weathered rock slopes; double-twisted steel mesh with or without steel cable reinforcement used to stabilize slope surfaces, prevent rockfalls and falling rocks; SEEE ground anchor technology to protect and prevent deep landslides on slopes; covering materials containing grass seeds to help protect against erosion on road slope surfaces, protecting a green, clean and beautiful environment.

"The application of new technology and modern new materials has contributed to improving the quality of construction works, being environmentally friendly, and minimizing the impact of natural disasters on the road system. This is because units in the road industry have increased the application of new technology and materials in maintenance and repair, thereby increasing the lifespan of roads and bridges and saving maintenance costs," said Mr. Diep.

Improve maintenance capital efficiency

Dr. Nguyen Dinh Thao, University of Transport, said that new technology is one of the useful solutions to improve the efficiency of maintenance capital.

If the traditional method of treating damaged road surfaces has the disadvantage of raising the road surface level, leading to the destruction of related infrastructure, and in addition, it will waste resources... With the solution of deep in-situ recycling of damaged molasses, the above disadvantages will be overcome. In particular, in-situ recycling using cement and plastic emulsion will help the recycled base layer to have high strength, stability and sustainability.

Regarding the economics of applying cold on-site recycling technology, Dr. Nguyen Dinh Thao shared that according to calculations, applying the new technology will save 10-30% compared to traditional technology, utilizing 100% of old materials, and shortening construction time.

In particular, to minimize the impact of floods on road infrastructure, in addition to the above technologies, many new technologies and new materials have been applied to improve construction quality, protect the environment and shorten construction time, such as: Treating damaged beams and bridge piers with fiberglass and carbon fiber; using carboncor Asphalt material in road surface repair; using cement as a road surface instead of asphalt or asphalt pavement, contributing to increasing the life of the road surface in mountainous terrain conditions.

In the context of increasingly scarce material resources, experts believe that new technology will solve the problem of lack of construction materials for foundations and road surfaces as well as meet new requirements on the environment and circular economy.

MSc. Nguyen Nhu Minh, Institute of Transport Strategy and Development, in recent years, management and maintenance work has been gradually innovated, successfully applying many scientific and technical products, using local materials, recovering materials, reducing environmental pollution in infrastructure maintenance.

Road traffic infrastructure built many years ago is getting better and better, with the ability to withstand the impact of natural disasters, larger loads with increasing traffic density; the life of the project is extended, the time for major repairs or reconstruction investment is pushed back to many years later, reducing investment costs.

However, a representative of a road maintenance enterprise said that there are still some difficulties in applying new technologies and new materials at present, such as: there is no uniform guidance on pilot implementation, application of new technologies and new materials and the development of technical standards and technical norms for new technologies and new materials to facilitate practical application in Vietnam; some new technologies and new materials applied for the first time do not have norms.
