Russia-Ukraine war today, May 31, 2024: Has the US given the green light for Ukraine to attack Russian territory? Russia-Ukraine war today, June 1, 2024: Is Mr. Biden dragging the world into a nuclear confrontation? |
The New York Times reported that US President Joe Biden, under pressure from advisers and key allies, allowed the Armed Forces of Ukraine (AFU) to attack military targets in Russia with US-made weapons.
According to sources in Washington, AFU attacks with American and Western weapons on Russian territory could begin in the next few hours or days. This issue was approved by US Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin in a confidential document sent to the White House.

The New York Times reported that the decision to review US arms policy was related to the recent trip of US Secretary of State Antony Blinken to Kiev. After consultations and discussions with US leaders, the decision to allow AFU to use weapons to attack Russian territory was submitted to President Joe Biden on May 15. If AFU attacks begin, US President Joe Biden will have “crossed the red line he himself drew.”
“This is a new reality (...) and perhaps a new era in the Ukraine conflict,” an unnamed US official said.
US will “limit” the targets Ukraine is allowed to attack
The US Department of Defense informed that President Joe Biden recently directed a team of advisors to review potential opportunities and targets for Ukraine to use offensive weapons in the Kharkiv region.
The US Department of Defense stated that Ukraine would be able to retaliate against the Russian military in specific attack situations. The Pentagon emphasized that the US policy regarding the ban on the use of long-range ballistic missiles ATACMS to attack Russian territory has not changed. However, this position may change in the near future.
In the initial phase, AFU can attack selected targets located within Russian territory limited by the US side.
The press secretary of the President of Ukraine Sergei Nikiforov announced that Washington has approved the use of the HIMARS rocket artillery system to attack the Russian army. Thanks to the US decision, the AFU has gained additional strength, significantly increasing its ability to resist the Russian attack.

The Kremlin said it had a response plan.
Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov said Ukraine attempted to attack Russian territory with US weapons.
“We are well aware of the current situation. There have been attempts to attack Russian territory with US-made weapons,” Dmitry Peskov said.
The Russian President's press secretary noted that this information is enough for Moscow to understand the level of US involvement in the conflict in Ukraine.
Military expert Vasily Dandykin stressed that Russia is prepared and ready to prevent US missile strikes deep into its territory. He also noted that Western weapons have been targeting the Belgorod region for a long time.
“ Well, not with ATACMS missiles, but with Czech weapons. We stopped them. And the ATACMS was shot down in Crimea ,” said expert Vasily Dandykin.
According to expert Vasily Dandykin, throughout the conflict, Russia's air defense systems were tested and improved in their countermeasures against Western weapons, and most of the attack missiles used by Ukraine were intercepted.
The expert believes that the main targets of US weapons will be the Sevastopol naval port and the Crimean Bridge. “ We can take the example that Ukraine currently has no weapons capable of striking Moscow. Only the Taurus cruise missile has a sufficient range, but Germany has never provided it. In any case, Ukraine’s attacks will be met with a decisive response,” said Vasily Dandykin.
Fighting on the Kharkov front continues fiercely.
Regarding the combat situation at the front, the Kharkov front is currently considered the focal point of the conflict. There is a lot of information that the Russian side is trying to cross the shallow section of the Volchya River north of Evgenovka and Voskhod. However, any Russian move could result in casualties because the AFU has prepared for this direction of attack.
Meanwhile, in the town of Volchansk, the northern high-rise areas are being destroyed by the Russian side with bombs and thermobaric weapons. The Russian army is trying to draw the Ukrainian counterattacking units into an urban war of attrition when Russia has overwhelming firepower.
Along with that, on May 31, Ukraine also organized attacks on the Crimea bridge, but failed. Many other Russian targets were also attacked by suicide UAVs, causing damage to an oil depot and a ferry.
On the Chasov Yar front, Russian assault units are still trying to control the Kanal area north of the Donetsk Server Canal.
In the Kherson region, Russian units continue to search islands along the east of Kherson city.
Russian strategic aircraft take off, Ukraine prepares for airstrikes
The Ukrainian Air Force issued a red alert when it detected six Tu-95MS strategic bombers taking off in Russia in the early morning of Saturday, June 1, reported Ukrainska Pravda.
"Four Tu-95MS aircraft took off from the Olenya airfield in the Murmansk region and two from the Engels airfield in the Saratov region. All bombers were carrying missiles and arrived at the launch site ," a Ukrainian Air Force source said.
Over the past few days, the Russian Air Force has been actively searching for foreign military positions in Ukraine. Attacks have been carried out on training camps and weapons depots in the Lviv and Kiev regions. These strikes were also in response to attacks by suicide drones and unmanned speedboats in the Black Sea on the Crimean Peninsula.
